ProjectMe 909 Posted January 16, 2015 Yes, it is a problem. Many surgeons prescribe colace (stool softener) to help, but it doesn't work that great for me. What works is getting lots of fluids in, walking, and milk of magnesia. Some people swear by Smooth Move tea, but it is a stimulant and causes my stomach to cramp. JamieLogical 8,710 Posted January 16, 2015 It does seem to be a common problem, but I haven't had any issues with it. I think that it's one more of those things that is just different for everyone and you won't know one way or another until after your surgery and you experience it for yourself. I've been super lucky and have stayed regular since a couple of days post-op, despite my super low Fiber diet. There are a lot of recommendations in other posts here on these forums about how to deal with the situation, should it arise.
macman 603 Posted January 16, 2015 I do not think any Constipation is due to eating Protein first. That is merely to ensure that your small pouch will get the necessary nutrients to survive. Initially your constipation is from the surgery, and the drugs and painkillers in your system. It takes time for the body to adapt. From surgery and through the food stages constipation increased for me. It was not until I began a full diet and ate a few vegetables that things began to change. Dr recommended that I take Miralax whenever I drank a Protein shake and that worked for me. This topic is talked about a lot in the forum and there are many solutions that have worked for people. Most of them are OTC at your pharmacy.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted January 16, 2015 It is a common problem and as mentioned it is a result of the surgery and anesthesia, not the increased Protein. I was started on colace in the hospital, had my first BM my 2nd day home and have not experienced any Constipation. My doctor kept me on colace for the first 30 days post-op. I've gone to the bathroom at least once a day since that first BM.
