Struggling w/ post diet

Recommended Posts

I am on my 4th day post op diet and am struggling with eating. I am supposed to be on pureed food. I find everything so unappealing. I can only eat half an egg in the morning. I have had about a teaspoon and half of deviled ham. lunch i tried homemade pureed Soup and gagged. So i got baby oatmeal Cereal and added Protein powder. Thank goodness i bought the liquid Protein to add to Water called LiquaCel.< /p>

I hope this gets better. Lost my appetite completely. I am starting to wonder...what did i do to myself?! ????

it is very normal to feel the way you do right now. trust me. I do question the egg in the pureed stage though but every plan is different. i wasnt allowed egg until stage 4 which I am in now. and no meat even deviled ham or tuna fish was allowed, but again thats my plan so yours could be different. for two weeks post op i was on liquids and purees, Soup broth, helped, but mainly Protein shakes, and they worked for me. the thing is, dont try to think of how eating was, you have to look forward to what will be. keep your eyes looking forward and get through each day until you see the weight falling off, then you will remember why you did this. Trust everyone here when they tell you, it will get better.

You CAN do this!

::HUGS::

That sounds about right. I didn't start purees until about day 10 and it was tough then - if it's causing any pain you might want to take a step back to full liquids for a day or two. Otherwise, one day at a time. It definitely gets better!!

Hang in there! Those first two weeks are a big adjustment. It takes a minute to get the hang of things. Know that you are doing the right thing in mixing the Liquid Protein with Water. In those early days the key things are Protein and fluids. You don't want to get dehydrated. Just keep sipping and trying out new foods. As you tummy heals things will settle down.

4 days post op I'm surprised you are already on purees/soft food. I agree that if it is too tough for you to handle right now, maybe go back to full liquids. I lived on strained cream Soups and yogurt during my full liquids phase and by the time I was allowed scrambled eggs, soft cheeses, etc. I had no trouble handling them (but obviously in VERY small quantities). I remember my first scrambled egg took me 45 minutes to eat maybe 2/3 of it.... But that wasn't until 18 days post-op.

I didn't start puree's until 3 weeks after surgery! I don't think I could have done it 4 days out. Just take your time with everything. Focus on your Protein and Water. At 4 days I could only get a single Protein Shake half a bottle of water and maybe 4oz of broth (still on clear liquids). Once you know you're getting a good amount of Fluid and protein then start integrating things Soups and other soft things and if you have a hankering for purees go onto that. It's all a bunch of trial and error. Don't let this get you down! About hmm.. I'm 7 weeks post op, so about 6.5 weeks ago I posted the same thing. It gets easier!

Different doctor's have different protocols. Some doctor's prefer their patients get most of their Protein from food and not shakes. There's no right or wrong here.

You may want to step back to liquids for a couple of days, then try soft food again. My husband had to do that. your tummy may not be ready for soft food yet.

Yeah he was very strict with the pre-op diet, liquids only. Now i see that i was able to go yo stage 3 on my second day home?? I did find that harsh. Not being able to do it makes me feel like a failure. But i think i am going to stick to just liquid stuff for a while until i think the tummy is more repaired. Thanks for cheering me on. I come here to vent i can't help it. But i left the house today and walked in 2 stores. Which is good. I know i have to walk more.

I think it is important to understand that you are fine eating so little - this won't hurt you. The main thing is hydration! Being dehydrated makes you feel absolutely horrible.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
