I had my surgery done a little over a week ago on January 7th. The last few nights I have had bad heartburn that wakes me up during the night. I have been taking tums but am wondering how long this will last. I never really got heartburn before and it's not like I'm eating stuff that would usually cause heartburn. I'm hoping that this is just my stomach getting used to the new one. I really hope this is not going to be my new norm.

Reflux is very common with the sleeve and can cause damage to your esophogus if left untreated. Many doctors prescribe an acid blocker post op. Call your surgeon or try something better than Tums. Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec are all over the counter.......but, I do advise yo to research about dependency. I used them for about 9 months and weened off to only Zantac, which is an acid reducer not an acid blocker.

Thank you for your reply chele. I'm hoping this will not be how it will always be. I am going to try Zantac or Prilosec today. Has anyone else who experienced this right after surgery had it subside after awhile?

My doctor started me on omeprazole (generic prilosec) in the hospital. I was put on it for 90 days Post-op. However as I transitioned to regular food I noticed I need it more. I increased my dosage to 40mg and now I am fine. We'll recheck the need for it at 6 months.

Today was my first day to have nasty heart burn after surgery and I wondered if it was new food, then realized I had forgotten to take my Pantoprazole in morning. Looks like I will need to be on it for a while.

My surgeon did the same. I had a prescription for 40mg of omeprazole for 2 months post op and then I was allowed to try to stop taking it. However, I quickly had reflux issues after going off of it, so I now take the over-the-counter dosage of 20mg every day and that keeps everything under control.

My advice would be to check with your doctor and/or surgeon and ask about taking Prilosec daily to prevent. For short-term relief of heartburn once you already have it, take Zantac.
