i know this may be a silly question, but i was wondering in answering that your obesity causes you depression would help your case for surgery or worsen or delay it.

thanks in advanced.

Are you asking would depression be considered one of the co-morbidities that would give you a better chance of being approved by insurance? If so, I think that depends on your insurance company and how your policy is written.

Sasha, I suffer from depression and when I had my psycological for the surgery it was with the Dr. I see normally! We had a good talk about this very subject and the Dr. can write it up that the patient would benefit from this surgery to gain self esteem and feeling better about ones self can open tons of doors. I do believe that depression was used as a co-morbidity but ranked low in my case.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

thank you too for the reply. i don't have depression like i would need medication for or like they describe on t.v. I think everyone has a little depression once in a while but doesn't require treatment. like i get sad and feel "depressed" for a little bit (not weeks or months) when i think about my weight. so i was wondering, if i answered "yes" to that on a questionnaire, would it help my case or be seen as a psychological disorder?

Personally, I would answer "no" on the depression question. Yes, everybody feels sad at times but that is different than depression. Good luck!

I don't think it would delay anything, but I was told I will have to stay on my Zoloft after surgery for a year or two, because some people get depressed after surgery (mourning the food) but I was still approved.

I'm self pay, so I don't have to wait on insurance.

Gosh! I think a lot of us suffer from depression at one time or another. It seems to me is should be a co-morbidity. I also felt a little depressed after surgery like I also was mourning the loss of food!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
