Just starting my 6 month supervised diet

Recommended Posts

My insurance covered the bypass or the band, ,,i opted for the bypass, ,but they didn't explain to much about which surgery would be better, ,,they were going over so much with me,,i still haven't seen the surgeon yet, ,they didn't tell me anything about any hoops, ,,just my 6 month supervised diet, ,then all my clearances,,and the psych eval,,,my bmi is pretty high for my height, ,and no other health issues

I haven't seen my surgeon in a medical way yet and I've been on this road since May. I've met him twice but he hasn't actually seen me

I've had nothing but problems and now have a hernia caused by the band. And i have gained back all the weight lost. It has been so disheartening.

that is terrible! !!! I can imagine your frustration with all those complications! !!!!!

Hi there! I started my 6 month journey last month and am hoping to have surgery in June. I was told the vertical sleeve was a no-go for me because I have a terrible time with acid reflux and the sleeve can really exacerbate that. My surgeon doesn't really do the lapband too much anymore. He says he takes more out then he puts in -- that was the one I really thought I wanted but when I heard that.....well, bypass it is for me.

My husband seems more concerned with me losing "the girls" than I am.....I've usually been pretty proportional. But as kyrickchick64 said, I don't think you know until you lose what you lose.

This forum has been so helpful for me.....even though I routinely check facts before I believe what I read, the emotional support has been amazing. Most of the info is good here, too.

Good luck! I have my psych eval today.

like you first of all my surgeon wanted me to have the sleeve so I was booked for one...then last week I had to have an Endoscopy due to me having heartburn and on "Omeprozole" to help it. Once the camera went down..the surgeon said I do have reflux and a Hiatus Hernia and the sleeve is no more of an option for the exact reasons you had..so Im now for a bypass which I wanted in tje first place. We know the bypass is permenant...no going back once its done...but i wanted this...a new education of food control. The band was a big no no and like you..the surgeon said...he dudnt like them as hes had to take them out..either to them slipping..not working...the thought of having a "port" that had to be revised all the time wuth extraction and re inserting of saline for the control band. And its a foreign body...a lump of plastic that the body might want to reject. The surgeon said..with the bypass and the sleeve...you still end up with what you had at the beginning but re plumbed into a different position and rare chances of rejection as its your own body. It made alot of sense for me. So next week..I be the same when they start to put me "under"

...excited but nervous...I mean...who wouldnt be!

Hello! I had RNY eight weeks ago. Each persons decision which surgery to have is personal but for me gastric bypass was my only choice. I wanted the reminder that if I eat something I'm not supposed to like a piece of cake or candy I will become ill. Trust me when I say I will never try to eat something on my forbidden list. Dumping and/or vomiting would be no fun. However, because of the limited pouch size ( about the size of golfball) I am not able to hold much. I cannot drink fluids with my meals and if I don't chew well enough food will get stuck and cause me to vomit. The pain is horrible when food gets stuck. Happened earlier today with chicken. ???? try to get as much info as you can before making your decision. Navigate to other areas on here because people who have had the surgery have a ton of opinions to offer. I am happy with my decision even days like today. It's a huge learning process. Your tastes will change along with what foods you can tolerate. I think the sleeve is a little more forgiving. Good luck on your journey!!!! ????

Sandy....Thats exact same resson im going to have the bypass...to educate what i can or cant eat...the dumping..is a warning sign..i dont think any otjer proceedure can give you such a good warning. Yes im prepared it will make me feel do ill..but when that subsides...Ican then take it off my list. And the same as you...it doesnt mean Im not going to try evety "bad" food for the gun of it..but this will help so much to educate my brain....as that kicks in last. I have less than 5 days to go...and Im reading so much....learning from you all..THANK YOU. Please anything you think "oh I never knew that" write it down as it will help us too.

GingerDiane, Good luck to you!!! Less than five days I bet you are so very excited. My only advice is to take things slow, allow at least 30-45 minutes to eat, getting your Protein and Water in will be a challenge (I'm still not getting it all), and really listen to your new little pouch ( mine is named grouch pouch). After surgery walk as much as possible and rest. I am never hungry so I watch the clock and even set timers on my phone to remind me to eat. You will do awesome!!! ????

Oh Thank you Sandy...I will definately take note. To not feel hungry will be an experience in itself! Yes I found an app for my phone that you set when you drink.....when to wait....then to eat...etc....Ive read up as much as I can..including graphic tv programmes on the bypass....To learn to "feel full" will be the most I want to learn ad ive never felt completely full.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
