Does anyone know anything about this procedure? Is it used for weight loss too?

A nissen has no relation to a gastric sleeve or plication in any way. The top of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus to prevent acid from rising back up into the esophagus, it is used for people with a lot of vomiting, acid reflux and hiatal hernia, it does absolutely nothing to the stomach itself, there is no removal of tissues at all, nor any effort to make the stomach smaller. There may be some minor weight loss while healing, but that's it all regular eating habits are resumed within two weeks. The procedure has NO weight loss indications.

Also just so its known morbidly obese patients are normally a contra-indication for a Nissens due to high failure rates, in that case the do recommend a gastric bypass to accomplish the same goals with weight loss as well.

Oh, I was under the impression that it restricted food consumption by repairing the hiatal hernia at the same time reducing the size if the stomach. The procedure was brought up in conversation and I thought it might be something that I would be interested in.

I could be denyed by Medicare or my supplement insurance for the sleeve so this option was brought up because I still have the hiatal hernia still needs to be repaired.

Perhaps the doctor is trying a work around that your insurance will cover. I've most commonly heard of these being used in premies with chronic reflux issues. (Not that it can't be done on adults with severe reflux, but I worked with premies and chronically ill children). So maybe your surgeon is looking to plication but bill it as this since the procedures are similar. Have you exhausted all appeals for the sleeve?

I'm still working on the insurance issue, I'm just looking at other options just in case I get denied. The doc didn't bring this up it came up in conversation with a friend but I plan on meeting with him soon. With my surgery being March 3rd. I want to get things going one way or another. The wheels turn slowly.

It might not be an option. The doc would have to carefully word his op. notes to justify the procedure and it might still get rejected by insurance. I wouldn't put the cart before the horse. Wait until you receive response from the insurance company and exhaust all appeal for what you do want before looking at alternatives.
