Stomach swollen almost shut after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 9/5/13 and have lost 90-94 pounds. I have had no issues with my surgery, but my SIL is two weeks out and is having a hard time. She has been unable to keep anything down and has been back in the hospital for a week and a day now. At first they thought her esophagus was swollen and that everything was staying there instead of dumping into her stomach. they were waiting to let her heal from surgery before attempting and EGD to dilate the esophagus. They did the EGD yesterday and found her esophagus was fine but midway through her stomach was so swollen it was shutting everything off. They did the balloon to open it back up and felt it would solve all her issues. However, she still was throwing up last night when she tried to drink even a little. she is dehydrated still and was not drinking enough to begin with when she initially got home from the hospital. Has anyone else had this issue or heard of anyone else? I am just at a loss of what to say to her or to think because I didn't have problems.

They should be giving her saline and anti inflammatory drugs in the hospital. It happened to another patient I was with after her surgery but only the first night and she got a plication instead of gastrectomy.

She is finally able to keep fluids down but still dehydrated. Trying to get her hydrated so she can go home. They started her on azithromicin (sp) to help wake up her gut. That is her explanation. Hope it works and all goes well from here on out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
