I just had the gastric sleeve done by Dr. Juarez at St. Lukes on 4/30. I did it through the VA in Phoenix, so insurance was covered, but I have to say, in the past year at the VA, I am less than 10 who have had it covered due to the heavy restrictions that are required.

I had a 2pm surgery time and was in recovery and awake by 7, walking around the floor by 9pm. I walked 4 laps every 2 hours with 0 pain and was released by 12pm the next day. Other than being on high blood psi meds and stopping those because my blood psi was getting to low, I feel great. Incisions are painless and internal gas is non-existant.

Is there a certain amount of weight you are suppose to lose? If you lose lets say 15 + lbs do they cancel your surgery? Since you are capsble of losing weight

No. it's not like that. If you can't lose weight on your own you would be in trouble. The surgery provides support by reducing hunger and cravings, but you still have to do all the work and make the lifestyle changes. The surgery also helps break the yo-yo dieting cycle, since it reduced inflammation and hormonal imbalances that can cause weight regain.

I used Dr. Sprunger for a gastric bypass surgery out of St. Lukes. If I could do it over I would recommend the Bridges program direct with St. Lukes. I was not impressed with Dr. Sprungers bed side manner or his assistant Melissa.

How long was your process through St. Luke's Bridges program?? from start to finish. I have Tricare and live in N. Arizona. I am deciding if I want to do a bariatric program in N. Az or in Phoenix.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
