  • Please let me know how your surgery goes!!! I'm really leaning towards using Elias Ortiz for my surgery as well. This has been so hard to make a final decision.

dr. sergio verboonen in Tijuana on 1/7/15. I went through Sheri Burke with international patient facilitators. Cost was $4500 total for 2 nights in the obesity goodbye center & 1 night in the grand hotel. I had a great experience & my husband, who was very worried & skeptical about the whole thing, was equally impressed. He even told some of our friends he would do it again. The facility is very clean, all of the staff was very attentive but I breezed through with no problems & very little pain. I can't say enough good about them. :)

Please do not use price to make your decision. Find a surgeon who you feel comfortable with and if they are on the higher end, save up. Ariel Ortiz (as opposed to Elias) is fantastic - slightly more than some of the bargain surgeons but worth every penny. I can't say what I paid but call Obesity Control Center, you will have no problem getting a quote with no pressure. Just please don't use price as a deciding factor.

Absolutely. @@slvrsax is right, don't let price be your decision maker. The reason I chose Dr verboonen was that I live in a very small town in a rural county in Oklahoma & at last count I believe there were around 80 people from here that had been to him & I had not heard one complaint. All I heard were good reviews & some were far enough out from surgery that I could see good results & no complications. I did research some other drs but in the end he's who I felt the most comfortable & confident in my decision. :)

@@bluesclues I've heard good things about Dr. Corvala. He must be the best kept secret because I don't read much about him on these boards. I heard of him through someone here in Seattle after I'd already had my surgery and she just raved about him and the post-op care. She is a nurse so someone's opinion with a medical background has more clout for me. I also heard Dr. A. Ortiz's name from a nutritionist here in Seattle, I had researched him initially but ruled him out early on because of price. My intuition kicked in and I had a sense I should save the extra money for OCC ($1800 more than who I was considering - big deal) and go there. I'm glad I listened to my intuition because I had some difficulty and Dr. O. helped me sail right through it.

I agree, don't go for the price, look for both PRICE AND QUALITY, first of all make sure they have all of their credentials, how experienced they are, how many surgeries they perform in one day, their accommodations, their staff, what do they include on the price, if they work by themselves or they assist you with a coordinator (they help A LOT, I used Bariatricpal), how many days you stay at the hospital and if they include a hotel or a recovery home, their follow up (very important also, I still Skype with my surgeon and nutritionist). I did mine with Dr. j. Lopez, they gave me a very good deal, but they didn't cut off quality, they are very attentive, from the moment they picked you up till they drive you back to the us. I never had issues, my surgery went well, no complications, the hospital wasn't all that fancy, but it was nice, clean and neat, the nurses were so sweet, the recovery house where I stayed for two days was really nice and cozy also, I can say great things but you should do your research, get in contact with them and if you feel comfortable with any of their doctors, I highly recommend them.

I am very interested in gastric sleeve & actually know a couple of people that have used your practice. Could you please quote me a price & let me know where to begin this journey? Thank you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
