Struggling with protein

Recommended Posts

Been having lots of difficulty getting my Protein in. The Protein powders and RTD bottles are all gagging me after 1 or 2 sips. I've tried just about everything that my nut has recommended, but nothing seems to work for me. I feel horrible...no energy and just want to sleep. I'm thinking about going off plan a little to get more protein from food. I'm only supposed to have 3 meals a day...up to 2 OZ of yogurt or cottage cheese or just an ounce of "meat" per meal. Thinking if I do to more little meals it might help. I know I can't eat more at a time cause it upsets my stomach.

Saw this and I'm claiming it. I will get through this!!!

It is difficult to get in the Protein in the beginning. I tried mixing in the powders by hand shaker. That didn't provide the proper consistency and as a result tasted very bad. I began using a Ninja (single serving) size blender. That mixed the powders well. It also gave me the chance to add other ingredients to the Protein shake. When you add a banana to the mix, it dramatically improved the taste of the Protein Shake.< /p>

There are a variety of Protein powders out there. The secret is finding one that taste the least offensive. For me that was Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme).

Another problem that I encountered was that immediately after surgery, I became lactose intolerant. So I could not rely on milk or milk products for protein. This condition went away after a couple months.

You need to find the Protein that works for you. Remember that Protein in and of itself has a flavor, when one says "unflavored" it means it's not had a flavor such as vanilla or chocolate added to it. You'll be drinking it for a while at this stage so experiment with several. If you go to a Vitamin store they typically sell single servings so you can try several. Also search this site, there is a listing somewhere of companies that will sent you "free of charge" a sample of their product. I wouldn't recommend too much meat at this stage. Even at 9+ months out I have a problem digesting it. Good luck.

This is hard for all of us. The other posters have given you great advice. Find a Protein Powder that works for you, and blend with your favorite fruits. I love the Isopure vanilla mixed with sugar frees frozen berries from costco. It makes a delicious smoothie with 24 grams of Protein. Experiment until you find a protein powder you like.

I struggled with Protein Drinks and finally found Proti-Diet which really tastes good to me. Has 15 grams per serving which might not be as much as others but I can tolerate it so that is what matters to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
