Just woke up with stomach acid in my throat and mouth. I'm miserable! I take 40 mg Omeprazole each morning (before and after gastric sleeve surgery). Pre surgery, I would take Alka-Seltzer and/or drink Sprite with soda crackers but less than two weeks after surgery that is no longer an option. I was not prepared for this surprise and I don't know what to do to stop it! Any suggestions?

@@Chele Martines It's not going to help you right now but you may want to break that Omeprazole up and take one in the am and one at night.

Thank you for the suggestion - I may try that starting tomorrow morning!

I was told it's OK to take Tums. I would do that if I woke up feeling that way.

I had (have?) acid problems and in addition to 20mg of protonix twice a day, I take 300mg of Zanac at bed time. I also cut out acidy stuff where I could.

Hope you feel better. I would suggest calling your surgeon's office so your treatment can be adjusted. Don't want an ulcer! ;)

Just had that 1 wk ago. I figured it was some ice tea I had just before bed. I now stop drinking tea about 3 hrs before bed. I also take 40 mg of protonix in the am and pm. You may need to increase the dose of your reflux meds. I feel your pain . I absolutely hate middle of the night reflux. Yuck.

"OK to take Tums"

Thanks for the tip - I took some last night and after awhile it seemed to help. I'm going to follow up with my doctor and confirm "emergency treatments." ;)

"I would suggest calling your surgeon's office"

My post-op is scheduled for this Tuesday. If it happens again before then, I will call. If not, I will wait until Tuesday.

Thank you everyone!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
