Why is this awful stall bothering me so much?

Recommended Posts

I had VSG surgery on 12/16. Since 12/23 I have lost and gained the same 4 pounds. I get on the scale a few times a week. Today it was back up to the highest. I'm beyond frustrated even though there is nothing I can do about it. I'm doing my best to get 60-75g of Protein in a day, drinking my 64 oz. of Water, and working out a few times a week (though my workouts are a bit lame). I KNOW that the stall at 3 weeks is a real thing but I'm still getting so discouraged by this.

After surgery I had a heart attack - its been a really difficult road for me. I'm starting to feel more normal and get into a groove with things. But I'm so scared by this stall.

Anyone else have a stall so early on. I mean that isn't even 10 days after surgery and I stalled. I'll be a month out on Tuesday - WTH.

HELP?

I am going through the exact same thing. My surgery was also on 12/16. And I haven't lost any weight in the last 10 days. Its super discouraging. But Im just trying to stick to the plan in the hopes that eventually this stall will break.

THE STALL WILL BREAK! I know it is discouraging. I just went through a 3 week long stall, followed by a 10 pound drop in the last week. It will happen! Stay off the scale. Follow your diet. Exercise! Increase your walking, workout or whatever by 5-10 minutes a day. It will make a difference, and the more you do it the easier it gets. It happens to everyone! Worrying about it doesn't change anything. It will break.

We're sleeve-sisters ORMom!! You know - I guess it just really helps to see that I'm not the only one struggling with this.

SuperDave - I KNOW it is normal - but when it happens it is so hard. Especially when its been such a long road and I'm still super exhausted and forcing the Protein and Water in. Its hard to imagine that getting only 700 - 800 cals a day in I'm not losing.

Is it because our bodies are in shock and holding on to our weight?

I think I just wanted to 'talk' about it to friends who would understand. And hear of others going through it. Because it does help to make me feel more 'normal.'

I think the good news is that in the past when this has happened I would go to the drive through or have a pint of ice cream. Now I can't. I have no choice but to power through and keep going.

THANKS! Love to hear other's experiences with early-on stalls!!

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches will continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. Here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

Stay away from the scale. It will make you crazy! Focus on meeting your Protein and Fluid requirements. Take your measurements. If you must weigh, no more than once a week and do it in the same location and at the same time of day.

Please heal and be kind to yourself. You've been through a tremendous ordeal. Stay connected here and stay off the scale. Heal, heal, heal. Hugs to you.

Your body has been through a lot, so just be patient.

I was one of the lucky ones, I did not experience the stall. I am not losing like crazy, but I consistently drop about half a pound a day ( I am one of those crazy ones, that weighs in every morning, it just works for me). Knowing about the 3rd week stall I started 5:2 diet that week. I eat normally 600-800 calories a day and on 2 days(Mon and Thu) I eat under 500. I always get in 60g or Protein and I keep my carbs under 50g. Also, I eat real food- I avoid the low fat, low sugar, low carb stuff. They have too many chemicals or other things replacing what they took out and you may be sensitive them.

I was sleeved on Dec 19, so just a few days after you, and I have lost 49 pounds (16 post op).

Be patient and really look at what you are putting into your body.

Uh ... what was that bit you said about having had a heart attack after surgery. Did you mean you have had a heart attack since VSG surgery?

If so, yeah ... that's not a normal WLS event.

Yeap welcome to the club. I would go down to say 170 then up to 178 then down to 174 then up again. It is discouraging but I promise you it will happen. Good luck and keep us posted.

Completely agree with @@VSGAnn2014 . Heart attack post-op is not a typical WLS course. Are you on any meds as a result of the heart attack? Some medications can also slow down weight loss. Either way be patient. It will happen.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
