Does anyone know what they use for contrast during the leak test? I have final consult with my surgeon Thursday, but the question just hit me. A few years ago I had an anaphylactic reaction to gandolium (MRI contrast dye) and now drs won't take any chances with that.

I had just assumed it would be a barium swallow, but then I started thinking "how are u able to swallow enough?" Just curious.

Thanks ????

I had to drink barium. I don't know if that is the standard for a leak test. But it was served to me in one of those paper cups they use when bringing a patient their meds.

It wasn't very much, maybe a tablespoon or 2. I had to drink it in 2 swallows. I drank the first bit, had to wait a few seconds and then drank the other half. It was tough, but I got it down.

You won't get gandolium, that's for MRI scans. The barium will be fine. Not tasty, but fine.

@@amyecpa They use barium sulfate. It's two chemicals mixed together,Barium sulfate is in a group of drugs called contrast agents. Barium sulfate works by coating the inside of your esophagus, stomach, or intestines which allows them to be seen more clearly on a CT scan or other radiologic (x-ray) examination.

Barium sulfate is used to help diagnose certain disorders of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines.

Thank you @Elode. My follow-up is in 2 weeks. I will ask about it then. If they did anything in the hospital I was not aware of it- don't remember any talk of it at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
