Lots of Flem

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that I have an awfully lot of flem in me. When I get sick that is what it mostly is. Sometimes when i burp flew comes up then too. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem.

It may well be what is referred to as sliming. If food does not pass through the band and backs up into the oesophagus, our body produces thick saliva in order to help it go through. If things are already backed up, this sits on top of the food, making matters worse not better. So things are forced back up, and the bit at the top which is the first to come back is that thick saliva.

I've got a wicked head cold currently with lots of phlegm backing up. Tight band due to this. It's normal and will pass. I can diminish the symptoms with a decongestant or even an antihistamine.

@@verna2197 if you are sick with a cold or flu, then yes having this excess phlegm is gross but normal. If you are not sick, then you could be having an issue with slime and that could mean that your band is a bit too tight.

I find that when I am sick, and I have that nasty phlegm (can't help but picture the Mucinex booger commercial in my head.) doing what @@parisshel said and taking an antihistamine can help dry things up..however for me this can also cause an upset in my tummy that I don't feel but it will cause an inflammation and make my band super tight. I have had issues with some medications causing stomach irritation, now my Dr. has me on a medication to help sooth and keep this from happening. So if your going to start taking medications give the Bariatric doc a call and see what they might advise as well to keep the irritation down.

One other thing that helps me is to drink warm liquids like tea without any type of Creamer this helps to break up that clog in my throat and prevents that nasty stuff from coming back the wrong way.

Feel better!!!

hmmm no I haven't been sick, I have had this flem ever since my surgery last Feb. I don't like it, am going to have to talk to a dr about it and see if there is something they can do about it. Don't really think the band is to tight, its only 4cc in a 10cc band.

Yes, sounds like sliming. You can try slowing down and eating smaller bites to reduce it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
