My surgery date is June 1. I have a one year old and reservations about the risks involved in surgery. Even though they are minimal, has anyone ever heard of surgical complications?

Hi Amy  We're being banded on the same day!! Your surgeon should cover the risks and possible complications with you prior to surgery. HOWEVER, you can look them up online too. A great resource I've found is Welcome to LAP-BAND.com. You can find risk and complications there.

Join us in the "General" forum" under the June 2007 thread :)

Welcome to LBT! There are risks with any surgery, and let's face it, this is major surgery. I was willing to take that risk, and I haven't regretted it one bit!

Yes, of course there are risks and you should definitely get educated about those so that you can do everything to prevent them...many are preventable. There is an entire section of this board dedicated to complications and you can do a lot of reading there. HOWEVER!...it is one thing to educate yourself about complications and it is another thing to focus on them. That's kind of a catch-22 about being here....many of us as we approached our surgery dates started freakiing out more and more about the possibility of complications because it seemed as though they are frequent. But they really aren't! It's just that people with compliccations tend to seek out a forum such as this more than the ones who are sailing right through without any problems. Y'know?? So, educate yourself and talk to your surgeon about the statistics....then come here for support if you find yourself getting nervous as the day approaches. Honestly, I don't know how anyone gets through this process without this board. It's wonderful!!!

Amy,

I can understand why you would be nervous...You have a little one that you are thinking about....

I agree with Betty...I took the risk and I am so glad that I did....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
