I have decided on Lap Band

Recommended Posts

I have finally decided after a long time that I am getting LB, which I was very very against at the begining. I am 30 yrs old, and I have 4 kids. I had my first child at 18, and three weeks from his birth, I had to have my gall bladder removed, which they said would hinder weight loss greatly. I have a sister who had her GB removed after the birth of her daughter as well, and she has gained a lot, too. Its confusing to me, because I do not have diabetes, high BP, bad colesterol, sleep apnea, or any of the other co morbidities that you would think a person with a BMI of 54 has, but I dont. About half of my family dont approve of me getting this done, including my husband. They think its the lazy or easy way out, but my body seems to adapt fairly quickly to dietary changes, and I tried two different weight loss pills and they both gave me scary side effects (heart palpatations, stomach pain, no loss of appetite etc..). Both my parents were overweight and my mother was dead by 42. I do not want to die early, and I have been praying about this and feel its the right move. Anyone else going through anything similar?

Oh man, I dont have any kids but i would like to. My Family has ALWAYS been big. The weight usually hits you when 13-16 comes around and i thought i was lucky when i turned 19 and i was still 125. I guess it was just a delayed reaction cause here i am 22 and im double what i was 3 years ago(WOWZERS) Ive decided on WLS about 6 months ago, I am still going through all the Hoops.

I Told my Husband How i feel and hes been with me from the Start. I Refuse to tell my family members because i know they will react the same as yours. 3 of my Aunts have Diabetes and 1 of them had to get their Foot Amputated. I have 5, Yes 5 Uncles(Blood/Inlaws) Who are all Moribly Overweight, and 1 of them passed away last year because of heart problems that came with the weight. Yet None of these people refuse to believe wls is actually a good idea. I myself refuse to let myself fall down that path. My Own Mother, Who is Overweight, Listened to my Aunts and Uncles about the weightloss surgery a few years back and skipped out on her chance to change her life. She is 40 years old and almost 350lbs.

Ive decided i wont tell anyone, I may tell my mother because we are so close but who knows. Im tired of people saying "Its the Easy way out" Or "Just do it the natural way". Ya know what? It is easier, Because im getting a tool to help me. Tools make everything easier or atleast more bareable. Could you imagine having to pound a nail in wood with your barehands(i swear this is what struggling to lose weight is like) because someone said using a hammer was the easy way out?For some people Surgery is the ONLY way out.

I Want to have Children in a Few years and i want to Live long enough to see them Grow, Graduate, Get married, Have kids, and see their Kids grow. Ive already decided If you not here to support me? You are not Invited to my new Life.

Sorry for all the Rant, but its been a year of hearing peoples opinion and i just decided i need to worry about me and my own. I suggest you sit down with your hub and try to get across why you rather choose to get this Surgery than Die. Im sure he will get it.

The simple fact is that it's for YOU. When I decided to tell my family, I already had my mind made up. That including telling my husband. I remember when I told him, he said "I don't think you need to do that." I replied with "I don't think you understand. I've already made up my mind. This is what I have to do for me. You can support me or not, but it's going to happen either way so I would appreciate it if you could be in the game with me." He was fine. And 130 pounds later, I want y'all to know that I haven't heard the man complain a single time about how I look these days! :) Hang tough! You know what is best for you. Don't let anyone steal your thunder.

PS: Two years out & I'll guarantee you, this is no "easy way out". It will test you, physically & mentally, but you'll be better for it!

I'm proud of you! Message me if you'd like to talk further.

Good for you for looking at your family's history and deciding that you are taking a healthier approach. My mother and sister died from complications from diabetes, my brother has diabetes also . at age 66 I decided I had to take control. When people make the assumption that weight loss surgery is the easy way they have no idea what we go through and how it is a constant process to maintain the weight loss. Lapband is one of the hardest things I have ever done, physically and mentally. The surgery itself was not difficult but afterwards it's weeks of liquids and progressing to soft and finally regular food. I had a great checkup this week with my primary doctor. No more diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. It was all worth it. At your age you have so much life to live. Live it well. Keep us posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
