Terrified and excited one month out

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new here but have been reading these post for a while

I am in Australia and booked to have a sleeve on feb 9

I am a doctor, but this makes the process even harder as I feel like a failed in looking after myself and am now having surgery! By one if my colleagues!

My BMI is only 32 but I have metabolic syndrome with pre diabetes and am on metformin (which is awful) I am only 37 I have 2 small children and I do not want to become a diabetic within the next 5 years...which is where I am headed

I have had two failed pregnancies this year (probably from high sugars) and have finally realised that I need to do this for myself and my family

I am really worried about the recovery and the permenent nature of what I am about to do to myself

But I am off to the psyc on Monday so i am hoping I can talk about these things with her

I really need some help controlling my weight and I need the rapid weight loss to reverse my metabolic condition...so as my husband says..'you really have no choice'....still terrified

Would love to hear some positive recovery stories

I am self employed and the bread winner for my family so can only afford 1 week off...but only working 3 days the second week

Thanks for listening

@@Rosie77 - I had the exact same feeling when i had my insurance approval and a date set! I was terrified of any and all complications that could happen! I have metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and pcos and I completely understand your feeling about metformin! I was sleeved on Dec 22nd. My recovert has been as smooth as it can be! No unexpected complications, have not thrown up so far and am able to get in the required amount of fluids and Protein. The first day was pretty painful but I was up and walking a couple hours after I got back to my room at the hospital. I did have moderate pain and was restricted in what I could do the first 2 weeks especially the main incision site was still sore. But after that I am almost back to most of my activities!

Good luck! Be positive, it is certainly not as bad as I had imagined :-)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
