Does weight loss usually plateau at some point?

Recommended Posts

Some of my family members think I'm losing too much too fast. I've been pretty fortunate in that the weight has steadily come off (except for the traditional 2-3 week stall). Does the loss eventually pretty much stop or plateau? What do you do if it keeps coming off and you can't keep up with your calorie intake? I'm 3 months out, down 42 lbs, (74 since my highest weight). I struggle with sliming, so some days I don't get a good amount of calories. Other days I do fine.

Worrying for nothing??

You will probably have several plateaus as you lose your weight. I had 2 or 3 that would halt the weight loss for 4-5 weeks then it would start going down again. As I got close to goal I worried that I wouldn't be able to stop the weight loss. I went right past my goal and kept losing, unintentionally. However, my body eventually stopped where it wanted to be without many eating changes on my part. Even gained back a few pounds. Now I have to be careful of what I put in my mouth or I will gain. Don't sweat it, your body will decide what it's set point is, just keep eating healthy and getting lots of Protein.

I feel your pain! 6 weeks post op and have been stalled for almost 3 weeks. Going to nutritionist Friday to help me with this crisis. I'm working out 6 days a week to boot. From what I've read it's normal.

I've had a stall at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and now again at 3 months. Sucks!

I've had maybe 1 or 2 stalls. I'm 2 1/2 months out and I'm down about 65 lbs from my heaviest weight..I get the "is that even healthy?" Talks from family. But I get in my Protein and water..I've been worrying about losing too much but I figure it was a big step to be healthy so my body will stop when it's ready

I think people don't realize this isn't your typical weight loss plan. This is pretty darn extreme. So the weight loss is a bit extreme too. As long as you're getting everything in plus your Vitamins you should be ok.

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches will continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. Here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
