Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

Recommended Posts

@@losing-it I have a hiatal hernia too. Of I could do it all over I would have done RNY hands down. I did a two week liquid diet and post liquids none off that is easy. As is the decision to do a revision.... I wish you the best and I am glad that my story gives you some insight. Some people have done real well with the sleeve. Just not me.

@ I can imagine that's not an easy decision. Is it a long process to go through to get the revision? And idea when you'll get it if you go ahead?

I am not scheduled for endoscopy until May. The nutritionist is sending everything to the insurance, she thinks they will tell me I still have to do 3 month diet. I am not sure if I mentioned in previous post, I was pregnant and my sleeve stretched. He said I am not the first patient he has seen that in. Here's my thing there is not a whole lot of data yet about the sleeve. Everyone assumes if sleeve stretches it is because one over ate. I was so sick during pregnancy small meals was all I could eat. My capacity has grown since then. I have very little restriction...

@ every gets stretchy when your pregnant, I wonder if that's what's impacted your sleeve? The main thing is you're healthy now and you need to give yourself time after your pregnancy. Besides losing 53 lbs is awesome!!!

I was speaking to a girl yesterday to had a band to Rny revision 6 weeks ago, her weights coming off aggressively now and she looks amazing and is finding the bypass great! No problems. Hope everything works out for you to get yours!

I've finally decided I'm going for the sleeve. I've heard lots or fors and againsts for both ops and I know I could have reflux issues but right now I'm not ready to go for the bypass. @ I know you're going to think I'm mad, but I really want to give this a try first.

Of course not!!! You have to do what is best for you. So many people have done fabulous with the sleeve. I am sure you will do great!

@@losing-it, I am glad that my story is now able to help someone else! That is the ENTIRE reason why I didn't feel right about keeping my journey a secret! I do take extra Vitamins, as I was found to be deficient in Vitamins A and B1 when I had my three month labs drawn. I take one of each of those every day in addition to my multi, and I also eat chewable Biotin tablets because I have lost a lot of hair. The Vitamin A and B1, i was told, are deficient for me because I was unable to eat meat for so long after surgery. The nutritionist said that with time as I am able to tolerate more meats, or learn which meats I can eat, I may not need them at all as they are vitamins that are commonly found in meats. I do tolerate liver vert well, and strangely I do not mind how it tastes. It was on a list of recommended foods by my nutritionist because of my Vitamin issues, so I try to incorporate that into my diet at least twice a month. I don't mind taking the vitamins, but I also try to follow whatever suggestions that I get from my nutritionist.

RNY for me, hands down. I was a serious diabetic, now not at all., further the plumbing change means that you can't ever really get the stomach stretch of the sleeve patients because you have a stoma and not a sphincter exiting your stomach/pouch. also approx. 3 meter in total of small intestine is no longer used to absorb food so the same person eating the same things would lose more weight with the by-pass than the sleeve. See what I have done below, had my surgery July 2014.

I had my heart set on the sleeve but I already battle with acid reflux. I might have to re-think this. Praying I make the right decision. ????

Your surgeon should be able to counsel you on what would be the best. I knew gastric bypass would be the best for me, with all my previous health problems. I have heard a lot of "horror" stories on here from both but people tend to share/over share the bad experiences that they have had. I would research them both online there are a lot of good medical articles for both types online.

I went in requesting the sleeve, however. ..My dr explained it this way, the sleeve is more for those that over eat, RNY is for those with metabolic issues.

THIS was most helpful to hear. I went yesterday to my last class before surgery (June 3rd) and was a little frustrated. I was hoping to meet some other patients having surgery close to mine. What I got from the other patients was grief as to why I was having surgery in the first place (BMI is 40!), and why I chose bypass instead of sleeve. I kinda felt ganged up on as the other patients were having the sleeve. It was a little discouraging.

I originally wanted the sleeve but through my journey decided that I wanted bypass instead. It just seemed a better fit for me.

So thank you...

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
