OMG, Optifast for two weeks and broth, Jello, and coffee. I'm going to die before my surgery. I start the classes tonight for six weeks, my follow up mental health appointment is already scheduled for the last week of my classes and they are thinking I should have a surgery date set within two-three weeks after my last class. So this pre-op diet is the liver cleanse, right? Is it just for two weeks? I read someone else on this site lost 50lbs. during the pre op diet. Heck, if I can stick to the pre op diet and drop 50lbs who needs to spend the money for surgery. LOL

Anyway, I am really worried about the pre op diet because liquid diets are really hard and I have no will power; hence I need surgery.

Any suggestions on how to survive?

I feel you and have the same struggle with liquid diets. I too have to be on a two week diet prior to surgery.

Today was my 5th diet doc of 6. I haven't gained any in the 5 months but my surgeon told me he'd like to see another 10 pounds for next month. 10 POUNDS?! I've averaged like 5 each month.

He told me to eat a Protein packed Breakfast and then supplement 2 shakes a day. I'm going to do it, but I'm going to do it kicking and screaming because it's not even my pre-surgery diet! So I'll probably have to do it for another two weeks after that, at least. Maybe even longer.

We can do it tho. Imagine all those cute jeans we'll fit.

TLBolin... If I can do this seriously anybody can. Tomorrows my 1 week mark. I'm not gonna lie. It is hard but it does get easier. First day was the worst. I find it hard to cook for the rest of my family but I keep going take it day by day. I hope the next week goes by quick fingers crossed. I don't find the shakes too bad either. They taste not bad and to get me to the next one I do the broth and Jello. You can do this...... My eating habits before this were atrocious. Good luck

I am getting my surgery done in Toronto so I called the hospital and they ordered them. Nestle Health Science. They are called Optifast 900. I've lost 14 pounds this week and I have one more week. Surgery is next Friday.

My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for Jan 23 and I haven't been told anything about a pre-op diet other than no eating or drinking after midnight the night before. I'm confused.

A 2 week pre-op diet is to help shrink the size of your liver before surgery.

@@pak65, every surgeon and team is different in their pre-op process. From having hung out here for a while, I think the most common pattern is to require a liquid diet in the two weeks leading up to surgery, but some require three weeks, some require two days, some require no changes at all. My surgeon doesn't do liquids at all, but restricted me to 1300 calories/day for two weeks leading up to surgery. If your surgeon & team aren't talking to you already about how to eat in the next two weeks, they clearly don't require you to do something special. It's worth asking at your next appointment if there are last-minute diet changes coming, but otherwise don't sweat it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
