Mexico would be so much cheaper. I've discussed it with my husband and he says no. He doesn't trust mexico. We live about 45 min from the port of entry and there are so many kidnappings and murders happening here from the drug cartel, so we tend to not want to be in Mexico. It's so much more of a hassle and expense going this route and having to deal with daycares. And the fact that I have chronic bad back pain I feel like no one understands how much pain I'm in everyday and don't know how long I'll actually be able to work

My insurance excludes any weight loss surgery as well. It was going to be $15,000 oop locally. No one in my family was thrilled with the idea of me going to Mexico either but I am pretty stubborn once I set my mind to something. I felt perfectly safe in Tijuana. I was on the 4th floor of a fancy Marriott in a big bed surrounded by feather pillows. They delivered broth and hot tea to my room. In the hospital I had a private room for my husband and I. I would do it all over again if I needed to.

Just a thought--would you consider another surgeon? Many will bill the insurance for the hiatal hernia and then you pay the difference which can be small, like a couple thousand or even less. You could probably call a few offices and check.

@krisrpaz. I have BCBS AL & I was denied because my BMI was only 40 or greater for two years, we appeal & they still denied. Then January 1, they no longer covered WLS.....so frustrated 7 months of OOP expenses down the drain. SP $15,300. PLEASE provide doctor's information for Tijuana. I'm desperate! Thanks

I have BCBS FL but there are lots of different plans. My employer chose a plan that doesn't cover it. I understand, there are only 30 employees and we have no monthly premium.

Anywho, I had Dr. Alejandro Lopez do my surgery. It cost $4,500. I did not have any other issues like hernia and I wasn't a revision surgery so there weren't any extra costs. While I was happy with the outcome, I believe it is very very important to do your own research and find a surgeon you feel most comfortable with. There are lots of excellent surgeons in Mexico, you just have to find one you are comfortable with. Hospital is also important. There's a brand new gorgeous hospital there, I can't remember what it's called but it is supposed to be a state of the art facility.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
