Toddler mom considering sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

So, I'm a working mom to a 15-month-old and I already spread myself very thin. I've been researching, and trying to get this surgery for almost three years now (insurance, ugh), but I've never heard anyone talk about navigating this surgery process with a needy human on your hip. Can anyone tell me how they got through the surgery and made time for diet planning and exercise? I'm concerned that maybe I should wait until my daughter is older, even though I'd be missing years I could have been healthier.

If you can get help for a few days while you recover, you should be fine. Your energy will be a little low for a few weeks but then you feel normal, dare I say you'll have even more energy. The diet is no different than any other diet when it comes to time, it takes a little effort with food planning and preparation. Exercise is encouraged but not everyone does that right away. I'm sure you could find a fun workout video and get your little one dancing around the living room while you're working out.

One thing I have read over and over is people saying that their only regret is they wished they'd gotten the surgery sooner. If you want it, don't wait.

@@Mega_100 It's just like any other "weight loss process" in a way. I can be time consuming, you will have a recovery period but other than that if you don't have any complications ect..it's just living. You just eat a little different and less but overall I don't feel like my life is dramatically different my food consumption just is and I'm more mindful. I had a 4 yr old at the time and it wasn't a problem. In fact it will benefit your child way more in the long run! It's worth losing a couple weeks where you may not be able to carry them around ect....

Thanks for your responses. It's difficult to juggle life as it is, so I was hoping this would give me more energy to keep up with her!

If someone can help you full-time for the first week (when you can't drive and may have some pain), you will be fine!

Mega - I was in the same boat. My daughter was 15 months when I had the surgery in Nov 2014. Thankfully my husband had time he could take off to help me with her for the first two weeks. And this may be terrible, but other moms will probably agree... It's impossible not to break the 6 week rule and not lift them. I think by day 4 or 5 post op I was picking her up, picking up her toys, doing baths etc. you know how it goes...things have to get done no matter mom's state. I ended up going back to work just about 2 weeks later.

As for food planning... For me it was way easier because I could eat so little. Hardest part was not trying to sneak a bite of my daughter's dinner and getting the hubs on board (and I walked in on my husband eating a big burger and fries once... He acted like I found him looking at porn). shakes in the beginning makes it super easy. Then you just adjust your shopping like you would with any diet. I am now down 43 lbs in 8 weeks.

Workouts I am going to start this month - just aiming for 30 mins 3x a week to start. Will likely have to be at 6am since the munchkin gets up at 7a.

Does that help? I was worried at first too with a little one but now it's just life.

@@frizzylizzie The visual I got of you catching your husband with a burger is priceless. I got a good laugh out of that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
