Fizzy Drinks???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have not yet seen anybody talk about the lack of fizzy's in their diet?! And by this I mean that I was told that I could not have anything fizzy post-op. I have also experienced that fizzy drinks causes me to blotter out and feel really uncomfortable. Gazes have nowhere to go???

Anybody out there having similar problems?

When I came back home after the op, one huge problem was what to drink if we went out socially. I am not big on orange juice and let's face it it isn't a low fat option! Coke is out of the question and so it lemonade!

We experimented down my local pub with various drinks! My tipple is Brandy...like you wouldn't have guessed that! LOL. Very hard to make a long drink with a non fizzy option. After various unsuccesful (and sometimes hilarious or disgusting!) attempt, I am now having Brandy and coke but I flatten the coke first. That's ok when I am in my local as they put it in a pitcher and I have a great band of friends who take it in turn to stir the coke until it is flat. Sometimes a bit dangerous when some lovely landlord decide to put sugar in to flatten it quicker!!!! Do they not get the meaning of diet pepsi!!!!!

Very annoying when we are going around town or when visiting friends. I normally end up carrying bottles of already flat coke with me!

I also found that however well the coke is stirred, there are still remnants of fizz in it and it eventually still makes me feel blottered.

My surgeon says that I should not find it a problem as I should not be drinking much alcohol as it is fattening...one I gave up my food, not my alcohol altogether as well!....two, I still need to have a soft drink option when socialising...or should I stay home as well!!!!

Any kind soul out there who would like to share their wisdom on the subject?

Hi Brandychick,

I'm a vodka and diet coke girl myself and if I have it in a tall glass with lot's of ice, it goes down no problem. Sorry but there is no way I am giving up alcohol !!

Hope this helps,

Take care,

Donna x.

Hi Brandychick

Before the op I was a total diet coke addict and I mean seriously! I would have it with Breakfast, lunch and dinner and it was the only thing I ever drank and I thought that would be the hardest thing to give up but I haven't touched a drop since New Year as I knew I was being banded in the Jan and my Dr told me it could make the band slip.

I have been told I could drink it went its flat but it wouldn't be the same for me. My tipple was Voka and diet coke but now I drink Vodka with either orange or pinapple juice and its ok but not the same so I have started to drink wine when I go out instead. I do miss the diet coke :(

This is something I too have been worrying about. I am no way going to give up alcohol either and wine makes me drunk really quickly. I Don't really like Vodka with fruit juices so will try the flat coke route. I only had my first fill last night so am a bit scared of everything at the moment, cos last week I could (and did) eat or drink anything!

Hello Brandychick, there are tons of threads around here about this subject, try doing a search for any one of these:

Carbonated

Soda

Pop

Carbonation

Some docs say it's okay after the band is well-seated about 6 months to a year, but most docs it seems say either nope, never again, or drink the soda flat.

I'm not yet banded, but I gave up the carbonation in January because I didn't want to be faced with it at the same time as surgery, too stressful for me.

But if you are putting your mixed drink over ice and letting it sit for a while, I would think you'd be okay, as long as you aren't very recently banded. It might be painful going down.

My Dr says no fizzies.. none at all.. ever. Sooo.... having said that I mourn the loss of my friend, beer (sob).

So, now the new drink list is looking like this:

Vodka & Cranberry

Malibu (or Parrot Bay) and pineapple

Tequila Sunrise

Daquoris

Margaritas

Wine

BTW... how soon after surgery did you drink alcohol?

Some good ideas there, but i have not got a sweet tooth at all so would find it hard to stay on some of these drinks all night!

Cookiesncream, I soooo miss diet pepsi, the flat version is just not the same. Sometimes I have a sip of it before I flatten it just to remind myself, but I know too much of it will make me feel really crap!

I was banded 18 months ago but the fizz still makes me really bad so I think I am much better off keeping off it. Luckily Melissa I was never much of a beer drinker before so I don't really feel too bad about it but I know how you feel, what a terrible shame. I will be honest, I was back on alcohol after 3 weeks. Probably shouldn't have but I have a very active social life and without alcohol what is the point of going out at all.

Just re-read that and it makes me sound like an alcoholic!! LOL! I drink on average once every 2 weeks, but it is rather binge drinking when I do. I stay out till the early hours of the morning!

I found ice a very good way to make it flat quicker....but I don't know about letting it "sit" there whilst it is going flat...I am not that patient once I have had one or two.

Melissa O, just noticed your goal! Very best of luck for your next 50 pounds. You will look amazing for your wedding day, just gonna be hard for the dress fitting if you are constantly losing weight! LOL!

Good luck!

I was told in no uncertain terms no fizzy pop ever again... although I could have the odd glass of champagne, if it was a very special occasion!!

So I have been experiementing, because, I don't like juices... why drink your calories when you can eat them? And, frankly, flat coca cola makes me want to puke!

drinks....

Brandy and peppermint... really nice and good for the windy tummy too!

Margaritas.... sweet and sour with the lime juice .... just the thing!

Daquiries! Again no fizz so they do down well too

I love a black Russian (vodka, coke, tia maria).I've found that it's perfectly drinkable without the Coke!!!

If I'm driving I usually opt for Oasis light, or lime juice with tap Water and a spenda sweetner!!! or lime cordial as it's very refreshing.

I hope that you find my suggestions helpful, it's what's worked for me so far!

I have tried your suggestions out last weekend.

I have to say that I was not fond of the margheritas and 2 would probably set me on my ass!

Black russian was cool but rather expensive! I am not made of money you know! haha!

The pepermint overtook the taste of the brandy a bit much but was bearable.

Needless to say, that I was rather drunk by the end of the night! haha! LOL!

Any more suggestions would be welcome, I am planning on getting drunk this weekend as going to an hen night!!

You will find it hard going on holiday so soon after your op! The good news is that the pain from the air they pump in you during the op should be all gone then (mine was hurting in the shoulders and it is not funny, so if you have not heard about it yet, be warned! but it normaully only lasts between 7 and 10 days)

As for drinking, you will be on your post op Fluid period. This means that you will be able to drink but be careful with those hidden calories in alcohol! Do you think you will find it hard to be on fluids and mushy only whilst on holiday? Might be an idea to get yourself prepared as I am not sure how helpful restaurants will be with your post op diet??!!

Let us know how you get on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
