What can't we eat...

Recommended Posts

I seriously think I'm having a brain fart moment. There are many things we can't eat or drink ever again after the surgery. Is there a list somewhere with these food items listed out for us? I could have sworn I'd seen one online but I can't seem to find it now. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I plan on posting this list on my blog for others to see as well.

I think it really depends on your doctor. Mine doesn't believe in "you can never eat XYZ again" but rather all things in moderation and if we can tolerate it, as long as we get in our Protein and liquids and don't go hog wild on things that are not healthy.

FindingSassy,

My nutrionist gave me a booklet of each of the diet stages with foods to eat or avoid. I did look online for you and found the following helpful. Go to:

ucsfhealth.org>patient education

A lot of info comes up so go to this one:

dietaryguidelinesafterbariatricsurgery

They have a small sampling of diets to follow. Hope this info helps.

Maggie

I agree with ready2B. Nearly everything varies depending on what your doctor believes and/or feels is the best decision on your behalf. Some folks regularly use/eat things that were an emphatic "no" from my doctor- like using straws and drinking sodas. I doubt there's a hard and fast list of "nixed" foods for all bariatric patients.

It is interesting how surgeons have different protocols for their patients. I don't believe there is a complete list o things to stay away from but for my surgeon, the bigs ones are NOcarbonated beverages or drinking through a straw. No fluids 30 min before and after you eat.

I can pretty much eat whatever my body tolerates which could be dangerous because I don't seem to suffer from dumping.

I am smart enough to know what is good for me and stay away from those things that are not.

The reality is, if you focus on getting healty Protein and some vegetables in first, nothing else really fits. That is how the tool is supposed to work.

If you go off plan and do things to stretch your pouch, you will be right back where you started. Surgery still requires will power on your end.

The most important thing I have noticed is you really can do most everything in moderation and what feels fantastic about that is you actually savor your food instead of wolf it down.

Good luck!

So true it's really moderation and what you can tolerate if you stop right before you take the final bite when you're still in the comfortable zone i think you'd be fine but if you push it each time until you reach uncomfortable zone you're gonna have problems.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
