smoggie 11 Posted January 3, 2015 Just wondering what I can expect the 1st night after my opp, will I be aware of anything like for example: will I be awake enough for tv? Will I even feel like it? And visitors, is there any point in anyone coming to see me?
catdaddy 232 Posted January 3, 2015 They'll make you walk for one thing so you'll be aware. Most likely you will not be watching TV that night but be sleeping very hard. You'll know visitors are there but you won't be having a lively conversation.
onmywaytobeingfound 163 Posted January 3, 2015 I couldn't hardly stay awake. I could hardly carry a full conversation. I knew my family was there but I couldn't keep myself from sleeping. Talking made me exhausted. I didn't feel like much until the next day in the afternoon. Even that was minimal. I went home after 2 nights in the hospital. I've progressed much better being home. Surgery was Tuesday. It's Saturday. I've done dishes, folded laundry. Make my own "food". Every day will get better for you.
esskay77 785 Posted January 3, 2015 Yeah, I was up and walking around but then I would get in bed and couldn't stay awake. I felt bad for my visitors because I just could not stay awake. But once I was out of the hospital, I improved quite quickly. I did discover that the pain meds were making me nauseous so I stopped taking them right away and found I really didn't need them. Yes, I was a bit uncomfortable but that wasn't too bad. Better than being nauseous.
James Marusek 5,244 Posted January 3, 2015 I skipped the pain medicine after surgery. Found out I really didn't need it. I was up and about walking around 2 hours after surgery. Didn't watch much TV but I walked so much that the nurses told me to scale it back. The first day I had an IV hooked up so it was difficult to walk because I was dragging that along with me. But the second day, they removed it and the hospital stay became better.

But I think that it does little good and generally speaking a muscle relaxer would help more.
JustJaime5 32 Posted January 4, 2015 I had my sleeve on dec 9 and my doc sends you home. I def took pain meds for the first 3 days. Still did a lot of walking but was not really in the mood for company. So it was done on tues and I kind of laid low until Friday when I felt more like myself. My experience was a little different though because it ends up I had an issue with one of my incisions that was causing me a ton of pain. It ended up the following Monday they had to cut it open and drain it and clean it out again. But no pain after they did that so I'm not sure what the "normal" level of pain should be. This week I'll be a month out. I still have the open incision that's healing well. It will probably take another 2 weeks to heal. But better healing then it being infected. TLBolin 3 Posted January 7, 2015 I had the band put in about ten years ago and as soon as I was coherent they had me up walking for short periods of time, rest, walk, rest, walk. The walking helps to move some of the gas through your system otherwise you'll feel like you are having a heart attack with all the chest pressure from the air getting into your abdomen. They gave me pain meds but I only took them the first day and didn't need them except for the day I went home. My dog was so excited to see me that she jumped on my right on my incisions, knocked me back out of the front door, I hit the ground, and thought I was going to die. Other than those I didn't need the pain meds. You'll be fine. Your family will also understand if you are not chatty the day you have surgery. Good luck! anaxila 501 Posted January 9, 2015 I was pretty useless the first night of surgery. My husband was on hand to look after me in general, but I wasn't much use for company or conversation. My surgery was later in the day; I didn't go under until 130pm, and wasn't out of recovery and into my room until almost 7pm. The whole night was a blur and I didn't feel up to even taking my first walk until the following morning.
DgotSleeved 103 Posted January 9, 2015 honestly right after surgery I was SUPER nauseous. the nurse threw the kitchen sink of nausea meds in my iv and then I was fine after that. I also did not have any pain meds, just a tylenol drip three times during my overnight stay. barely any real pain aside from when I had to get up out of bed to do my walks and use the bathroom. the worst part of it all was the Migraine I had after from the anesthesia. I did like 6 walks during the first night and about 4 prior to my discharge the following day. the swallow test was rough bc the stuff tastes like soap ???????? the gas was kinda bad for about 3 days and the only times I felt like I was gonna vomit was when a gas pocket would get behind my stomach. just took some deep breathe and burped a little. I expected soooooooo much worse considering that a major organ was partially removed lol hope everyone had a speedy recovery. I was sleeved on 12/17 and I feel so normal it's kinda scary lol

Katie Maybee 0 Posted January 10, 2015 I am nervous about the first night as well! But I know it's really important to get up and walk around as soon as you can to help prevent alot of issues from happening.
