I started my second day of shakes. I cried so much last night like a big scared baby. You would have thought my best friend "food" died. I'm hungry and finding it hard to be around my family when they are eating. I feel like I'll never get to enjoy a beautiful Bbq steak dinner or anything else again. My breath is horrendous which they said was a side effect but YUCK. I'm scheduled for roux en y and talked to a co-worker yesterday who said the sleeve in their option is better. Yikes!!! Anybody else feel like this?

Every day with the pre-op diet is easier. I firmly believe it's mind over matter, if you want this you'll do it. As far as what type of surgery to have, that's only something you and your surgeon can know is best for you. Each has it's own purpose, and should be decided on based on your current health and your desired goals. It's not something you should depend on someone who isn't aware of your particular situation can tells you is best. Trust your medical team on this one. As far as post-op food choices, it really isn't as bad as your imagining. You'll be fine.

Don't worry food is not dead . Before you know it it will be time for your surgery . I'm 4 days post opp and when I was on my liquid diet I thought I was going to go crazy but then realized that it was for me to become a better me. Don't worry and fret you will be able to eat again just not as much

Thank you both so much. I needed to hear those type of comments. I appreciate you responding. I'm soon nervous. Keep thinking it's not real. I'll be re reading your comments from now until surgery date. Gives me something to keep me going

Don't worry that's why we're here to help each other out. I cant wait to eat chicken again I just know it went be alot but the wait well be worth it . Just picture being able to eat something and not eating a whole lot and it being good.

I remember feeling exactly the same way you did when I started my liquid diet- it was like a "food funeral", thinking everything good in my life was just taken away from me. I did a lot of reading about why I was suddenly starving, plagued with headaches, and generally crabby all the time. One of the theories (which I believe in) is that our bodies are truly going through a withdrawal process, with sugar, carbs and/or caffeine as the "drug". I'd become so sugar and caffeine dependent that when I suddenly cut it completely out on the pre-surgery diet, my body/brain was out of whack for a few days...so bad that I actually purchased Vivarin pills and took them to wean myself off gradually because the caffeine withdrawal was so bad. But it does get better, and once you have the surgery, you might be surprised how little you actually want that food that calls out to you now. Plus, if you have the unfortunate experience of "dumping" if you do eat any of that stuff after surgery, you'll want it even less. Keep your chin up- we're all here for you! :)

What you are feeling is normal, dont worry you will be able to eat again, I agree with the above post trust in your doctor an your choice being healthy is so worth it good luck my friend and remember to take one ay at a time.

I'm going through the food funeral now. I have a question for SuzeMuze, when you dump, let's say on a sugar item and never want that to happen again so you don't eat that item...do you want the SUGAR less or do you just not want to dump?

Is your co-worker a bariatric surgeon? If not, I'm not sure what makes him-or-her qualified to recommend one procedure over another for you. The only value of this comment is to give you practice on how to respond to well-intentioned but off-base comments from outsiders. I'm sure he-or-she means well, but that sort of thing is just supremely unhelpful.

I'm very fortunate to be able to say that I've never had the experience of dumping, but the fear of getting sick outweighs my desire to have the sugar again, and to be perfectly honest, my cravings for sweet stuff are nowhere near what they used to be. From what I understand, it's the sugar that causes the dumping, not the actual item- dumping can happen from lots of kinds of sugar, not necessarily just candy/cake/whatnot. I've listened to folks who've told me they dump on Pasta, bread, and fruit juices! If you look around the forum here, you'll see all kinds of stories of people's experiences with dumping, & that fear is of anything that has sugar- not one food item specifically. What I have experienced (and I don't know if there's an official name for it) is a stabbing pain right at the base of my breastbone. The best information I could find is that it's caused by food blocking the itty bitty stoma (opening to your new itty bitty stomach pouch). For me, it happens when food is too dry (like meat) or doughy (like breads). It's absolutely horrible, and what's worse is that trying to wash it down with a drink of Water doesn't help at all. Top it off with an inability to throw everything up (Sorry if this is TMI) and it's an overall miserable time for me. But, similar to dumping, I remember every single food that made me feel that way (since I can't seem to group them by nutritional content), and I won't touch it again for a loooong time. ;)

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you SuzeMuze. My diet has me on low sugar, good carbs, good fats and Protein, protein, protein. I'm just hoping to be able to "gently" find out what's gonna make me sick. But, it's trial and error, sorta. Us gotta have common sense. Thanks for sharing with me. Never TMI around here!✌

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
