Losing Weight, but now my arms look awful

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what I can do to help my arms get smaller. I'm losing weight in other places, but not at all in my arms. Because, I'm getting smaller in my body, my arms look worse than ever! What can I do? Has anybody tried bodywraps or cellulite cream? I'm doing exercises, but nothing is helping. My dress size is down by at least 1 or 2 sizes, except for my arms. This is a real problem! Advice, please??

I hear ya! I now have all this lovely flabby skin hanging down from my arms that disgusts me. Not sure if there is exercise that can help it. But, I plan on having ps once I get to goal to get rid of any excess skin, lift the girls, etc.

I've always thought this was the mark of someone who was obese. If you look through a million before & after pics.. particularly those who DON'T get plastic surgery.. even the goal weight, skinny 'afters', have unusually large arms for their size. I figured that's just part of the territory.. and very common in the pics I see.

If you figure something out that helps, do share! :(

My arms are awful as well but I met someone the other day who has had surgery on her arms since being at goal a while and the scar is awful!!! It runs from her elbow to her armpit and is very noticeable so I am now thinking I will just have a TT and wear shrugs to cover the arms! I'm trying to get some swimming in so hopefully that will help. :(

I asked that question the other day when I was getting my second fill and the np said that it would have to be taken care by surgery. That's something I won't be having, so guess I will have to wear 3/4 length sleeves the rest of my life

My son is into exercise and I also have the same problem...he bought me these balloon material scarves - you can get them in Target, they come in 3 strengths and you can use them to exercises for your arms and they will burn the fat off. I believe they also use these for Pilates.

For me it is the lack of fat that is making my arms look horrible. Its the hanging sacks of skin where the fat USED to be. I've been lifting a lot of weights and the tops of my arms are starting to be much more toned but underneath you would never know because it just hangs like bat wings. I'm only 25 but I was/am quite overweight.

What's really strange is that one arm is more uniformily hanging and the other is firmer part way up and then as you get closer to my armpit there is that saggy skin all of a sudden.

I won't be getting surgery on my arms and I'd rather have saggy skin then die from complications with obesity- and hey, maybe it will tighten up some, eventually.

I've always had big arms.......... they are HORRIBLE now.. after losing and regaining weight so many times.... I think one day I will have the ps even WITH the scars... sometimes I can't wear a top because my arms won't fit.... I've always heard that genetics play a big part of your arm flab after a big weight loss.

I personally dont have a lot of problem with my arms, they have shrunk down and I have the normal mild bat wing effect that you develop as you age. I've tired toning too and the same thing - the tops of my arms and shoulders are lovely but the underneath not so great. I can wear sleeveless things etc but just have to remember not to wave, roflmao!

There has been discussions on here about a new type of arm lift where its all done through the armpit and avoids the big long scar. I paid no attention because its not something I need but a google search should find you some info.

Tracy, I have the same problem with shirts! UGH!! It's so frustrating to put on clothes that ought to fit, if only it wasn't for my ARMS!! :omg: I've literally cut the arms off, hemmed the armholes under, and worn "matching" shirts as sleeveless button-ups with a t-shirt underneath.

And while I've "only" lost 40 lbs so far, my arms are definitely changing (for the worse) already. My arms sage from pit to elbow! :( (My inner thighs are rippled now, too, BTW.) I've got a feeling I'll be one of those 3/4 sleeve shoppers by the Fall. I might actually fit into "regular" plus-sized clothes by then, so thank goodness they're in fashion now! :D

I'd be very interested in PS without the huge scar to get rid of the terodactyl wings that are surely in my near future... If anybody finds some good info on that new style of surgery, please post the link!!

Hey, I like the name taradactyl wings.....very descriptive. I also have the same problem with clothing. Now that I'm losing weight, I can almost get into a 20 on the top - except for the sleeves. Also, since I've lost 34 pounds, my thighs are starting to have this "lovely" rippled, sagging effect, too. I think I'd be willing to have a scar, if necessary. A scar is better than the hanging bat wings and ripples above my elbows! Has anyone tried the body wrap thing????? Please tell me it works!

It is "nice" to know I am not alone in this- sounds pretty universal. While my biceps are getting bigger the tricep area is awful. I just hate the way it looks but I think surgery is out so I will have to wear longer sleeves- or just get used to it. i also have the new problem in the thighs- also lovely bit goes with the territory. No short shorts in my future!

my good buddy that had the RNY 4 years ago has the arm issue.. she wears long sleeves... even when dressing fancy (like a lacey see through long sleeve) it holds her arms in..

I LOVE teradactle WINGS!!!!!!!! LOL :)

Thanks Jachut for the info.. I'm going to look it up.

I joined BariatricPal in 2008 & I FINALLY made the descision to have WLS!! I'm so excited & not sure what I need to do to get the ball rolling, but I made an appointment with my PCP for 7/19. It's a start I guess.

I've been dreaming about it for 30 years or so. It's time to make it happen!

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
