Struggling with the Preop diet

Recommended Posts

I have to confess--I "cheated" last night. I had cream of chicken soup! Normally I would find it disgusting but it was, like, THE BEST Soup EVER. I really needed some sodium, and that did the trick. Back to normal now, no weird queasiness!

Today, I went to TJ Maxx and stocked up on sugar-free coffee syrups! I got coconut, white chocolate, pumpkin spice, and toasted almond. Oh, and salted caramel. Getting all geared up for the next week until my surgery.

How's everyone else doing?

Good luck to all of you. I just found out today that I will qualify for the sleeve surgery. There will be a couple of extra months during prep work, but it will be worth it.

I had some chicken broth tonight as well. It was delish! I'm supposed to have 3 to 5 shakes a day and I am struggling to get 3 down. I'm hoping the broth in between will help!

Hello! I am new here! 24 years old, 250lbs and 5ft tall. I do not have a surgery date as of yet, but do know that it will probably be in March this year. I have met with my surgeon last month, and gone through most of the clearances that I need to go through.

I am starting to incorporate a shake into my day, to find flavors that I do like, so I don't have to figure it out last minute! Which shake is the one that you can mix with hot Water to make chicken broth? What brand is that?

Thanks and you're all doing an awesome job!

Courtneypaige cross the chicken broth wasn't a Protein mix. It was just regular bullion... nothing exciting unless you haven't had anything but shakes in 3 days! However Celebrate makes a Soup protein mix. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it's good or not. I think they have chicken and Tomato. Good luck to you. And smart move figuring out what you like now. I've tried 3 different brands and flavors and so far I only like 1.

Also on pre-op diet. But different diet than what has been written here. Only 10 days and I can do 2-3 Protein Drinks and a meal of 300 calories staying under 850 total calories. No mention of no coffee except 3 days before surgery. It's been very hard but having 300 calories of real food (beans, hard boiled eggs, a salad, few slices of orange, cottage cheese) has made it a bit easier. It is hard to stop with just a very small low-cal meal but so far I've been ok. However bad headaches from sugar withdrawal (my choice) and can't take aspirin.

I wonder why the pre-op diet is so different doc to doc? I am losing weight.

My doctor literally just said "protein shakes during the day and crunchy vegetables at night." No other guidelines really. Plus I asked if I could have a little grilled chicken at night and she gave in preeeeetty quick.

I have no dr to talk to about pre op diet b/c i am doing it in Mexico. I have to start jan 29th of pre op. i just emailed my coordinator. what i read off their website is one Protein Shake at Breakfast and lunch and small dinner salad with Protein and if necessary Protein shake.

doesn't seem like enough food in one day. i bought the premeier shakes which is 30 grams of protein, i do know i am supposed to drink half a gallon of Water a day. but i work all day long. i have pre diabetes and get shaky if i don't eat enough so is it really true that only eating that small of stuff will keep me all day?

thanks for everyone's adivce on getting me through this

i am getting scared

I am diabetic and have been off my meds since I started Preop diet. I am on all liquid diet no solid foods (every doctor is different) I do have 3 Protein Shakes a day and sugar free jello/Popsicles, I also have broth every once in a while and lots of Water. The first two days I felt like my blood sugar was dropping but after that I have been good ????. Good luck on your journey it is hard but it is doable.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I have one more day to go to surgery and quite nervous. I liked the Premier shakes, they were quite good.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
