Be_pretty_epic 69 Posted January 3, 2015 Hey ya'll! So heres the scoop. I had a lap band placed in January 2010. In Sept 2010 I had my First set of 23 blood clots that would follow up until about a year ago. The doctor who put in the lap band refused to fill it because he was scared I would get another blood clot. Well I started having really really sharp pains in my stomach and abdomen area and come to find out the port broke off and has damaged my abdomen wall. So I went to see a surgeon about having it removed and this surgeon was amazing. He agreed to take it out (he does bariatric surgery for a living) so i felt very confident with his abilities. Then he continued to say, well its a shame you had this placed five years ago and you couldn't use it, how would you feel about while I'm already taking out the lap band and doing the gastric sleeve... I said well I don't know much about the gastric sleeve and he explained it and i said well if you don't mind Id like to go home and think about it, and how does my blood clotting factor fit into all of this. Of course I know the procedures as Ive had to have many surgeries for blood clot nonsense. Ill have to be in the hospital 7-10 days and a heparin drip and stuff. I was just curious if there was anyone else who has a clotting disorder and has had the gastric sleeve done and did they have any complications? I have Factor Five Leiden- Heterozygous. Im just getting anxiety about this. I know its the right decision but it just makes me nervous. Thanks for your input!
knit50 1 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) I have Factor Five Leiden. No problems with the sleeve (done on 12/29/14). I had an injection of Heparin preop and was on Lovenox during my hospital stay. No complications thus far. Good luck! Edited January 4, 2015 by knit50
Be_pretty_epic 69 Posted January 4, 2015 Thanks for the reply! I actually can't do lovenox! I go straight on heparin! Glad to hear your surgery went well!
Angela Roberts 4 Posted March 20, 2015 Oh! I know this post is a few months old but are you guys still around? I also have Factor V Leidens. I was just told my cardiologist (who handles my protimes) would not do a 10 day lovenox bridge like my surgeon wants. I was hoping there was another option. Did your surgeons want a bridge that long or did they know more about Factor v then maybe my surgeon does?
Be_pretty_epic 69 Posted March 21, 2015 My fvl is a bit more complex. My body doesn't respond to lovenox. I always go on a heparin drip then surgery. It means more time in the hospital but it's worth it to me. And why are you seeing a cardiologist as far as protime etc. a hemo should be handling it. Most of the time much safer
Angela Roberts 4 Posted March 21, 2015 Easier one less Doc. I see a Hemo once a year. I am heterozygous so eh. I do fine on Lovenox but I am thinking that heparin may be something to throw at the docs. Its worth it to me too.
