Hey everyone!
I'm getting sleeved on the 13th of January and I'm on day 6 of my 14 day preop diet (I'm 5'6 and 130kgs)
SOOOOO hungry O.o

I'm restricted to 3 Optifast products per day, 2 cups of low starch vegtables and at least 2 liters of Water. Just green tea as the only extra. That, and... Coke Zero?
On such a strict diet I am seriously allowed to have Coke Zero?
No lean meat, no fruit, no coffee, but I can have Coke Zero.

Even though I am allowed to have it, is it still best avoided?? I want to do this all 100% properly without cheating, I know it has no sugar but surely it has other bad stuff. Did your dietician give you a similar allowance?

I am of course STARVING and haven't lost any weight yet on the diet.

I'd love to hear your thoughts thanks guys.

Well coke zero is bad for you in so many ways... Caffeine, chemicals, artificial sweeteners.... And isn't this surgery all about getting healthy? You have to give up carbonated beverages anyways, so I guess it depends on when you want to start. And it definitely won't help you feel less hungry. The artificial sweeteners will spike your blood sugar and then crash, just like the real thing.

And speaking of sugars, it always surprises me when surgeons and nuts recommend Optifast. It has more sugar than Protein....almost as much sugar as a candy bar! Not to mention the Protein is casein, which is not absorbed nearly as well as whey isolate. No wonder you are hungry and not losing weight. 3 shakes give you 60g carbs and only 42g protein, so you aren't even meeting the normal 60g protein requirement for postop patients. There are many other Protein drinks and Meal Replacements out there that will give you 20-30 or more grams of protein per drink with less than 5g carbs.

I would avoid it. You're not going to be able to drink it once you get sleeved so best to start getting used to it

Does your doctor's office sell the Optifast??? Premier Protein is a much better choice.....30 grams of Protein and only 5 carbs.

And..no, I wouldn't drink the Coke Zero either.

Coke Zero drinker, here. I gave it up cold turkey for 3 months pre op and 6 months post op. Now I have one glass or so a day, over ice. (I use a straw, too! Shhhhh...)

If your doc allows it, I don't see a problem. Mine didn't so I didn't drink it until it was ok'd. To me, there is not much difference between a coke zero and a cup of coffee with Splenda except the temperature and the fizz. Fizz won't stretch your sleeve, but it can be very uncomfortable, hence the reason for drinking it poured over crushed ice. It loses much of it's fizz that way.

Follow your doctor's plan.

ive never bought into the chemical thing, everything we eat or drink is made with chemicals even organic vegetables. I wont go into what organic means in the U.S. but its not what you think. if you need it go for it, yes after surgery you cant have it. BUT I have found a way around it, for when im off stage 4. You may notice on the market that there is a machine called a soda stream, to make your own soda. well you can get caffeine free coke and Pepsi and not use the carbonation function so you make basically flat diet caffeine free Pepsi or coke or ginger ale I believe too. SO this is a way to enjoy it. Like I said I don't belive in the bad splenda or whatever. If it wasn't for chemicals we wouldn't have Protein shake mix, chewable Vitamins or Calcium etc. Just my Opinion. Even my nutritionist thought it was a great idea for people who need that diet soda taste. As far as I am concerned if it helps someone lose their weight, Im pretty much all for it.

Good luck, You can do this! and I love you all.!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
