Hunger Question

Recommended Posts

For all the veteran's who've had RNY Gastric Bypass I would like to ask you if you find yourself hungry at all once you adjusted to your new life? With the sleeve one of the side effects is lack of hunger because of the reduction in the Grehlin hormone, is it the same with the RNY?

Thank you,

S.

I had a RNY about 20 months ago. One of the interesting things to me was that after surgery I completely lost my hunger. Now 20 months later, hunger does not drive me. Sometimes I think I encounter "head hunger". This is when your head tells you, you should be hungry even if you are not.

I am almost one year out and I do get hungry but it's not like before. And it doesn't take much to get rid of the hunger. But, I try to make sure I have a bunch of small meals all day now so I don't get hungry.

I usually don't feel hungry at all, I do however get headaches if I skip a snack, or if I get busy and am late eating a meal.

I am 5 yrs out and sometimes I am hungry and other times I think my bigger stomach is the one wanting the food. Sometimes hard to differentiate even this far out.

I don't think I experience what I used to call hunger. It's more like head hunger most of the time and I feel empty. It's hard to explain.

I am 2.5 years out and I experience a lot more head hunger than normal hunger but I most definitely get hungry for real. I have to eat something about every 2-3 hours or else I start to get hungry.

I know -exactly- what you're talking about referring to feeling "empty." I still swear that's real hunger but it really isn't is it? :/

I am 4 months post op and I do get hungry especially if I end up eating more carbs than I should. If i stick to a high Protein meal with good carbs (veggies), it keeps me fuller longer.

If I do get hungry in-between meals I will actually drink a cup of fat free milk which fills me up until the next mean plus it gives me good Protein.< /p>

By the way, my hunger kicked in right after I started working out more vigorously. Also it takes very little to make that feeling go away.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
