Bite size question ...............

Recommended Posts

First of all I am preop phase awaiting surgery date. But I am curious as to one of my NUT classes, a statement she made that is confusing to me. I know that it MUST be slow small bites with eating and chewed very well after surgery. I am working on that preop now. But she had us try raisins, but only let us take a bite of each raisin. Each raisin was two bites. Now other research states baby size spoon; others say toddler spoon. So half of a raisin is way different than baby spoon or toddler spoon. For those of you post op, what is the realistic response?

The objective is to slow down the way you eat. Let your stomach take its time in processing the food. I am a fast eater or at least I was before surgery. Now I eat with a baby spoon.

Post op I could eat 2 ounces at a time. I made sure to take my time. 15 to 20 minutes to eat those 2 ounces.

I was told that my bites should be about half the size of my thumb nail. I've been allowed chicken since Christmas eve and have had no trouble eating it by keeping to that size bite.

I'm almost 7 weeks post op and I still have to think about how small my bites are and how slow I eat. When I'm at home I use a baby spoon and fork ( it was actually one of my sons when he was a baby). When I'm out I try to only pu food on the tip of the fork or spoon.

I think it'll be something well have to think about for a long time.

Hang in there, you'll do great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
