My Dr's post op diet EXTREMEMLY conservative

Recommended Posts

I feel like my dr's post op diet is very hard. I read other people and am amazed. He has 4 weeks in each phase, liquid, puree, soft. There its no easy I will make 4 weeks on fluids. I go to my 2 week appt next week, I'm going to get some clarification on"fliuds".

YIKES! I was cleared for pureed/soft foods on day 8. It's amazing how different each dr. is!

@@HMR That does seem extreme. I haven't had the surgery yet (soon) but my post op, the doctor has the patient starting on puree on day 3-4 if tolerated.

ha ha, my surgeon's was even more conservative - four weeks of liquids, four weeks of purees, then four MONTHS of soft foods. And the types of food permitted on each phase were also very strictly limited. No high carb foods etc., as well as amounts, how often to eat. It wasn't easy - but I made up my mind when I chose my surgeon that I would follow his rules whether I liked them, agreed with them, or even understood them. Doing it my way wasn't working, obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have been 300+ lbs and seeking bariatric surgery. You'll get through it before you know it - it seems long at the time, but it's really just a blip!

My surgeon required 6 weeks of liquids. After that, I could slowly add in more solid food "as tolerated". He didn't have the in-between stages.

I have to admit, I was going a little nuts on the liquids, but I felt healthy and I survived it!

Thought my surgeons were conservative. But just imagine how you will look if you did follow your surgeon's requirements!

Clarify if it's Clear Liquids or full liquids. Clear liquids is challenging. Full liquids include Protein Shakes, Soups, and anything thin enough to drink. You will want to chew by week 2, but you won't be crazy hungry.

Ya, in his paper work it lists clear fluids and Protein Shakes, no mention of creamed Soups or cream of wheat, if I can have some of that I think I can handle it. I know we aren't supposed to be hungry, but I am.

Do you know the reason why different doctors have different requirements if it's the same surgery?

For one thing it's a fairly new surgery. So some surgeons tend to be more conservative and mirror their recommendations based on how they treat bypass patients. Additionally there has to be some variation based on the needs of the patient, and their medical history. For example, I am a vegetarian so the recommendations my nutritionist outlines for me may be slightly different than what someone who eats meat, fish or poultry.

bufflehead we have the same doctor! I am 2 weeks post surgery today and don't go back for my first post op visit until next Tuesday. I am so very tired of liquids! I am praying that they will let me progress to pureed foods but I'll just have to wait and see. I feel really good and feel like I've healed to the point that I can try introducing some foods but we'll see what the doctor says. I am looking forward to my first scrambled egg!

Mine was 2 weeks liquid diet before surgery then 1 week clear diet, 2 weeks full liquid diet, 1 week pureed/soft foods and then regular food.. wow 4 weeks in every stage is too much! But every surgeon is different

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
