catdaddy 232 Posted January 1, 2015 I did and It was internal bleeding. I waited a little to long to go back to the hospital and was close to dying. I stayed four extra days in intensive care. The good news was they didn't have to go back in but stopped the bleeding with medication.
Erin11 2 Posted January 1, 2015 Was it bright red or maroon in your stool? Mine is really dark almost black. Dr said that it is old blood coming out from surgery.
catdaddy 232 Posted January 1, 2015 I was home and it was five days after my surgery that I suspected something was wrong. My stools were black to start off with but there was a small tint of red. The first call to my doctor they told me to watch it too. I was having diarrhea the whole time and as time went by the stools were getting redder. Two days later I had lost so much blood I could barely walk and after calling my doctor I went to the emergency room.
bobby88 10 Posted January 1, 2015 Mine was dark too. It was just old blood from surgery. My surgeon told me to expect it for a few days after surgery.
Yes_I_Can! 13 Posted January 3, 2015 My surgeon told me it could be caused by the Iron tablets I have to chew, and to give it a couple more days, sure enough, it passed. I'm not saying this is always the case, but sometimes it's not as serious.
Paradisa 3 Posted January 18, 2015 I had this problem to the same day I came home from the hospital. I was horriblely lightheaded with the first bout also. The next day it continued and I called the surgeon and he said to watch it and also check my pulse. Especially since it was bright red blood. Over the next couple of days it darkened, and I feel fine, so I believe everything is fine. That first day was very scary though. I probably should have gone in though. I have been feeling extremely cold and tired since then and my mom who is taking care of me says my skin is very cold to the touch now. I will probably get my blood check when I have doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I have never been that lightheaded in my entire life.

catdaddy 232 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) Hi Srayl61, you must be looking over old post getting every bit of information about RNY. Good for you. I did the same and even download three books on the subject before my surgery. Strangely I had to repeat this story recently. At the time It was terrifying for my family I said I wasn't worried about it at the time but thinking about it now maybe it was because I was so far out of it at the time that I didn't care. I was bleeding internally from the surgical area after I came home from the hospital. Because the blood didn't show up until so many days after the surgery I'm sure it was something I did to open a stitch. I had some seriously heavy heaves after eating cream of Tomato Soup so I think that was it. After I got two units of blood I stayed in ICU for four days. I couldn't get up for anything and was not allowed to eat so it was really quite boring. Luckily I just had the surgery and I did!'t miss eating food. They successfully stopped the bleeding with medicine and thankfully didn't' have to go back in. Best of luck to you and don't worry about the surgery. What happened to me isn't the norm. jjwhitman 19 Posted January 24, 2015 For my own personal experience, and from everything that I have read it is normal to have black runny stools in the first couple days after surgery, but if there is any blood visible then this could be a very big issue. My problem was just caused by old blood left over from the surgery and also possibly from the big increase in Iron I started taking right away. Mine passed after the first week and became normal. Hi catdaddy, You are correct. I am going through the boards just looking for information prior to my surgery. Your story is the first of its kind that I read and it does scare me. I'm glad you are okay!! Hoping my surgery goes well without complications. Thanks so much for replying!!
MayorDucky 1 Posted February 4, 2015 This happened to me, too. Like many others, I was told to watch the color, and if it went red, then I was to worry. Mine stayed a purple/black color and eventually just all came out and the stool turned the regular shade of brown. Like the others have said, watch the color and check for other signs like feeling light-headed, nauseated, etc.
Shanna213 7 Posted February 27, 2015 I had dark and tarry. Expected from old blood during surgery and also the Lovenox (blood thinner) injections I got after surgery. With no solids for so long it took a few weeks to clear up.
