I did and It was internal bleeding. I waited a little to long to go back to the hospital and was close to dying. I stayed four extra days in intensive care. The good news was they didn't have to go back in but stopped the bleeding with medication.

Was it bright red or maroon in your stool? Mine is really dark almost black. Dr said that it is old blood coming out from surgery.

I was home and it was five days after my surgery that I suspected something was wrong. My stools were black to start off with but there was a small tint of red. The first call to my doctor they told me to watch it too. I was having diarrhea the whole time and as time went by the stools were getting redder. Two days later I had lost so much blood I could barely walk and after calling my doctor I went to the emergency room.

Mine was dark too. It was just old blood from surgery. My surgeon told me to expect it for a few days after surgery.

My surgeon told me it could be caused by the Iron tablets I have to chew, and to give it a couple more days, sure enough, it passed. I'm not saying this is always the case, but sometimes it's not as serious.

I had this problem to the same day I came home from the hospital. I was horriblely lightheaded with the first bout also. The next day it continued and I called the surgeon and he said to watch it and also check my pulse. Especially since it was bright red blood. Over the next couple of days it darkened, and I feel fine, so I believe everything is fine. That first day was very scary though. I probably should have gone in though. I have been feeling extremely cold and tired since then and my mom who is taking care of me says my skin is very cold to the touch now. I will probably get my blood check when I have doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I have never been that lightheaded in my entire life.

That's terrifying!!! What happened exactly that you were bleeding?

Hi Srayl61, you must be looking over old post getting every bit of information about RNY. Good for you. I did the same and even download three books on the subject before my surgery.

Strangely I had to repeat this story recently. At the time It was terrifying for my family I said I wasn't worried about it at the time but thinking about it now maybe it was because I was so far out of it at the time that I didn't care.

I was bleeding internally from the surgical area after I came home from the hospital. Because the blood didn't show up until so many days after the surgery I'm sure it was something I did to open a stitch. I had some seriously heavy heaves after eating cream of Tomato Soup so I think that was it.

After I got two units of blood I stayed in ICU for four days. I couldn't get up for anything and was not allowed to eat so it was really quite boring. Luckily I just had the surgery and I did!'t miss eating food. They successfully stopped the bleeding with medicine and thankfully didn't' have to go back in.

Best of luck to you and don't worry about the surgery. What happened to me isn't the norm.

For my own personal experience, and from everything that I have read it is normal to have black runny stools in the first couple days after surgery, but if there is any blood visible then this could be a very big issue. My problem was just caused by old blood left over from the surgery and also possibly from the big increase in Iron I started taking right away. Mine passed after the first week and became normal.

Hi catdaddy,

You are correct. I am going through the boards just looking for information prior to my surgery. Your story is the first of its kind that I read and it does scare me. I'm glad you are okay!! Hoping my surgery goes well without complications. Thanks so much for replying!!

This happened to me, too. Like many others, I was told to watch the color, and if it went red, then I was to worry. Mine stayed a purple/black color and eventually just all came out and the stool turned the regular shade of brown.
Like the others have said, watch the color and check for other signs like feeling light-headed, nauseated, etc.

I had dark and tarry. Expected from old blood during surgery and also the Lovenox (blood thinner) injections I got after surgery. With no solids for so long it took a few weeks to clear up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
