mroth28 23 Posted December 31, 2014 Hi all I was sleeved on 12/15. Yesterday I started my puréed food stage. The problem is that I never get to the full stage because I get horrible gas pains after every bite ( or sip). I am taking small sips of my Protein Shakes, and Water. Yet killer gas pains after each sip. Then I tried my puréed food, I used a tiny spoon and tiny amounts of food...gas pains. To the point that I have to move around to feel better. I only made a 1/4 cup serving but I couldn't eat it due to the pain. I am afraid that I will never learn my full point, and never get rid of the gas. Also I am never hungry so I think my hunger/full signals are all screwed up! Sorry for going on I am just worried. Have a happy new year!
facorsig 36 Posted December 31, 2014 One of the skills I learned on Day One was how to feel a gas bubble and induce it to come up so it is no longer in your stomach. The only other suggestion I could make would be to minimize the amount of air you swallow with the food. I never downsized my spoon size. Frankly, gas was a bigger issue in Month One....it's seldom an issue now in Month Three.
SuperDave 1,115 Posted December 31, 2014 I am nearly 2 months post-op. I had some of the same problems you are experiencing. My solution was chewable Gas-X and walking. You said you have to move around to feel better, so move around! I got to the point that i would take my Protein shake and go walk while I drank it. I still do that in the morning, just out of habit. Nothing wrong with getting your nutrition and your exercise at the same time. My gas problems mostly went away after a month or so. Also, if you aren't taking an antacid regularly, that might help with the hunger feelings. I take a crushed Prilosec morning and night, at the advice of my surgeon. As for finding your full, it will be easier once you start eating more normal foods. For now just focus on getting your Protein and fluids. That is the most important thing! It gets easier and you will adjust, I promise!

sallydswanson 4 Posted December 31, 2014 I'm considering this surgery but can't understand how eating works post-surgery. How do you eat in bites sized the half size of a thumb nail?! Can someone explain what life is really like after surgery, trying to be normal? I get the reduced portions, but how do you manage with such tiny bites? Tauruslady5 154 Posted December 31, 2014 Hi. Sorry to hear about the gas pain. Here is what I was told to do and it worked great. I had 2 teaspoons every 2 hours. I would take those two bites slowly meaning, I would take one teaspoon then put my spoon down for one minute, then take the next spoonful. Then I would put the plate away and in 2 hours do it again. I never felt hungry at all. After awhile, my tummy knew when 2 hours was coming because I could feel it. You have to keep it up and train your brain. I had my surgery 11/21 and I am still on mushy food, but just this week did I start to even try 1/4 cup of food.< /p> Annamarie
Buttercupbrown 70 Posted December 31, 2014 I felt All of this in the beginning and wondered if I was OK or was this Normal. Well, this site Helped me a lot! Sleeved in Nov. 18 and had terrible Gas, almost couldn't sleep lying down. Tums and Prilosec helped me through it. Now I'm fine, unless I eat too fast or lay down too soon after I eat. And Yes, moving around helps/ standing too. I was told...WATER FIRST, Protein SECOND, and small amount of food if you can. I also ate a lot of Popsicles, sugar free fudge bars, apple sauce. Trust...IT GETS BETTER.

Can someone explain what life is really like after surgery, trying to be normal? I get the reduced portions, but how do you manage with such tiny bites? It's hard to describe because it's related so closely to the physical changes made to your body. My nutritionist actually had me start practicing eating slowly pre-op. Some people use baby spoon and dessert plates. The average sleeved belly only holds 4 oz. Then there are things to contend with such as gas from the surgery and the tendency in the early post op days for the new belly to produce a lot of acid. All these things combined make it more comfortable to eat slower. Especially for those who experienced negative effects like sliming, frothing, painful hiccups, heartburn and/or vomiting. For me personally they all help me to be more mindful of not only what I eat, but how I eat. Instead of blindly shoving food in your mouth, you are now taking the time to savor each mouthful. Instead of overeating you stop when you are full.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 31, 2014 @@mroth28 - Are you on any ant acids at all? I was prescribed omeprazole in the hospital. I found you have to figure out what time of day to take it is good for you. Some people take it first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating. I tend to get gas in the afternoon/evenings. I take mind around 2 or 3pm.
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted December 31, 2014 (edited) afraid will never learn my full point, never get rid of the gas. Also I am never hungry @@mroth28 first off i got sleeved the same day as you!!!! three years ago in 2011!! and i'm still alive and kicking gas pains are common (not that that helps you any ) doc put me on Prilosec immediately after surgery per doc - i should continue to take daily, always you mentioned you are walking thats great!!! walk through the house take a break then walk again in a few minutes?/half an hour keeeeeep walking, moving the gas problem should gradually improve sooner than later hopefully the issue will be gone!!! when the gas is gone, other issues should improve too!!! don't worry about not feeling hungry at this time you will feel better to eat in awhile you will not feel restriction while you are in the early drinking stage as you start to have soft foods and progress.... you will feel a restriction!!! (your "full" feeling) all things take time - "it" will happen things should get better one day at a time look forward to a wonderful new year with your new best friend, the sleeve good luck kathy Edited December 31, 2014 by proudgrammy
