Measuring amounts-and protein shake ? please help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!! My surgery is next week the 8th and I'm getting all my stuff together before and I'm just wondering what's the BEST way to measure liquids and yogurts, broths , pudding ects. Since 4oz is the amount per serving I want to make sure I measure it accurately not guesstimate . Where and what do u buy to measure liquids and foods with OZ amount not cups amount ?!?!

Also my Protein intake for the 2 week liquid will be mainly Protein powder shakes BUT I love Premier Protein premade with 30 g. Is this ok to use 3 days post op?!? Or is it too heavy?!!! Suggestions please !!! Thanks :)

Thanks in advance !!

There are two different types of measuring cups.....liquid and dry/solid. The liquid measuring cup is the glass one with a pour spout, they usually list ounces. Mine is made by Pyrex. You can get one at Walmart or Target. The dry cups are the ones that stack inside each other.

pour your liquids into the measuring cup to measure before you eat. If you buy pre made sugar free pudding, they are usually 4 oz. cups. I would use the dry measuring cup(1/2 cup size) to measure out your yogurt.

I drank Premier from the day I got home from surgery, wasn't too heavy. You can thin it out with some Water if it is too thick.

Hi Carol,

I had surgery 11/24/14 for measuring i used glass/plastic measuring cups with oz listed. I also used 1/4 measuring cups. You can also use a food scale to help as well. (Walmart , target any store)

Premier should be fine you will be drinking it in small increments.

Good Luck!

Thank you Chele & STW

Your help is appreciated. Will go to target tomorrow. Don't think ill buy a scale , I'll use the 1/2 measuring cup for solids like yogurt, broths, cottage cheese etc.

Have you ever diluted the Premier shake with Milk instead of Water? I think I will try that :)

Also, for a shopping list could you make sure I have the essentials for the first two weeks: ( money is tight, so im doing the basics)

Protein shakes

Crystal Light

Measuring devices

chewable Vitamin

sugarless popsicles

sugarless pudding or Jello.

Cream based Soups ( any recommendations?)

Greek yogurt. ( I think Dannon Fit light is the best in Protein? )

What else do I need for the first two weeks, I've seen a lot of people having gas issues. I'm having the Sleeve , if either of you had the sleeve do you recommend Gas X strips or any liquid kind?

Cal Citrate ( after 2 weeks)

Thanks in advance!!! Im very nervous for this but am excited at the same time!!!

2 ounces = ¼ cup

I regular sized ice cube is approximately 1 ounce (helpful if you make a large batch of Soup and want to freeze it for later use.

Conversion chart

I tried Premier Protein RTD. I found it insanely sweet and preferred diluting it with Water & ice. If you use milk you might want to get skim or 1%.

Greek yogurt. ( I think Dannon Fit light is the best in Protein? )

Plain greek yogurt is higher in protein. I buy FAGE 0% and add my own fruit

What else do I need for the first two weeks, I've seen a lot of people having gas issues. I'm having the Sleeve , if either of you had the sleeve do you recommend Gas X strips or any liquid kind?

I was prescribed omeprazole (generic prilosec) in the hospital.

No my scale didn't come with anything but you can use a cup, bowl ect on it and zero it out then measure whatever you need to. I didn't use it in my two week post-op because I was on liquids so I just used a measuring cup when I needed to. I normally didn't even need to do that because I was taking such a little bit in it didn't even matter, I mainly just kept track of my oz of Water and Protein.

Now that I'm more advanced and on regular food I use it to measure out chicken, cheese, shrimp ect....lots of things!

Good luck having 4 oz! LOL I'm on day 12 and can't eat more than a tablespoon at most. But, check these out: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Diamond-Multi-Purpose-Mini-Cups-With-Lids-2-oz-50ct/17056809

Also, get yourself a digital gram / oz scale. Super cheap on Amazon or at Wal-Mart. You'll be glad you did!

I drank the RTD Premiere Protein Shakes before surgery and still to this day. Before surgery and the first couple of weeks I was cutting them with 4oz of skim milk. They just seemed to thick for me. But now I have one practically everyday for lunch and drink them all by themselves with no problem. I am 9 weeks post op.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!!

Just an FYI.....weight and volume are not the same. A scale is good for measuring meat, cheese etc. Example....a half cup of dry Cereal has practically no weight. If you put it on a digital scale I would think you would get way more than half cup if you weighed out 4 ounces.

4 ounces of dense Protein like meat is going to smaller than 4 ounces of something light like corn flakes. Not that I saying that anyone is eating cereal. I am saying that 4oz is not always a half cup and vice versa....it depends on what you are measuring. I just measured out 1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal into a measuring cup and it only weighed 1 ounce on my scale.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
