Sandy,

I won't lie to you. The hospital stay and first few weeks are tough. But you will be so happy with the results. This new year will have so much promise for you. I think you will even go lower than your goal. Remain calm and remember why your'e doing this for yourself. It's pretty much textbook because it's preformed so often, so complications are rare. But still major surgery so recovery time is needed. The 2015 year will be a good one for you. Welcome to the club!

HI SANDY

EVERYONE SEEMS TO GO THROUGH THIS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.

I JUST HAD MY RNY BYPASS 12/24/14 YEP CHRISTMAS EVE. I AM 62 YEARS OLD AND I HAVEN'T FOUND IT THAT DIFFICULT FOR ME AT ALL (CROSS MY FINGERS). I HAD TO COME HOME WITH A DRAIN. UGH! BUT IT WASN'T AS BAD AS I THOUGHT. I WENT FOR MY 1 WEEK CHECK UP TODAY AND THE DOCTOR TOOK THE DRAIN OUT. YEAH! I THINK I HAVE UTI THOUGH. THEY ARE CHECKING TO SEE. THE FIRST NIGHT IN THE HOSPITAL WAS A LITTLE ROUGH, BUT THE NEXT DAY THEY TOOK THE CATHETER OUT & I WAS UP WALKING FEELING MUCH BETTER. I REALLY COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH BETTER I FELT IN 1 DAY. I WENT HOME SAT. & HAVE GONE UP AND DOWN STAIRS (SLOWLY) WITH NO PROBLEM. I THINK THE WORSE PART WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE ANY liquids UNTIL AFTER THE SWALLOW TEST. THE SWALLOW TEST DOCTORS WERE'NT THERE BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAY, SO I HAD TO GO WITHOUT ANY liquids FROM TUES TIL FRI. TALK ABOUT DRY. BEFORE THE SURGERY I WASN'T FEARFUL BUT I WAS ANXIOUSLY EXCITED TO GET THIS ALL OVER WITH - IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. YOU'LL DO FINE. JUST CALM DOWN & BREATHE. REMEMBER GOD'S GOT YOU. THINK OF WHAT A HEALTHY, THIN 2015 YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE - ALL THE THINGS THAT WERE PUT ON HOLD BECAUSE OF YOUR WEIGHT AND HOW GREAT IT GOING TO BE TO COMPLETE THOSE. GET OFF MEDS. OR NEVER START TAKING THEM BECAUSE YOU'RE TAKING THIS STEP NOW. ONE THING I DID OR RATHER DID NOT DO WAS ALLOW ANY NEGATIVITY COME IN TO DISTURB THE PEACE I HAD ONCE I MADE UP MY MIND TO DO IT. I HAD ALREADY LOOKED AT BLOGS, NEWS & RESEARCHED TO THE HILT. AFTER THAT I WOULDN'T READ BLOGS THAT CONTAINED NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES. LIKE I SAID, I BELIEVE EVERYONE HAS AN INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. IT'S UP TO YOUR BODY - SO THERE'S NO SENSE IN STRESSING. YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. JUST RELAX, BE BLESSED AND ALLOW YOUR BODY TO BE. ENJOY THE MOMENT OF IT ALL. WHAT'S THAT OLD SAYING "TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED" AND WATCH YOU FLOW RIGHT ON THROUGH IT. HAPPY NEW THIN YEAR DENISE

Thank you so much Maggie and Denise! Glad you are doing well after your surgery Denise :) The only thing that worries me the most is once I lose the weight the sagging skin. I feel as that is going to stress me out the most.

Don't even think about the skin issue. Just concentrate on one thing at a time. Then ask around about plastics. That might not even be a big issue for you. Depends on a lot of factors. Keep skin moisturised, exercise when doctor allowed. Also depends on your age as younger skin has more collagen and bounces back better.

Hopefully I wont be too far behind you. Should have had my bypass October 17th but halifax has messed up my husbands account and their "1month" to sort it has taken 5 months so far so it's on hold. Going to go back this weekend and pray they sorted it so I can get booked in for feb/March.

Im not going to lie to you about the sagging skin issues. Yes we are woman and we hate the excess skin before surgery and we are going to be very self conscious with the hanging skin lol. At least for me I hate my arms, which can flap like I'm going to fly, but honestly I don't dwell on it or it will steal my joy of losing over 100 lbs. People always tell me so what your skinny now you look great, so I try my best to feel blessed and not focus on the stupid hanging skin which I'm the only on absencing about.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
