Whew...the nerves kick in.

Hi. I'm 3 weeks pre-op. My surgery date is scheduled for jan 19th. I'm realizing today, after my pre-admission testing the reality of what I'm about to do and though I'm very excited I'm also getting quite nervous which is not like me at all.

I realized today that I didn't ask a whole lot of questions related to post-op life, immediate and long term. What to eat? What to avoid? Is my family prepared to support me in this effort? Will they be able to fend for themselves while I'm restricted to liquids and mush?

Throughout this whole process I said I'm doing this for me, and I am but I cannot help worrying and nurturing my "boys".

I just needed to say all that and get it out of my head. I've been on the wls surgery journey since August and I'm not quitting now. Thank you ....

The first four weeks after surgery is a little difficult but you can do 4 weeks standing on your head. It goes by so quickly. I had my WLS for Dummies book and referred to it all of the time, as well as the notes my doctor's office gave me. Just follow the rules and the weight will fall off. Yes, it gets boring and old but you will learn to spice it up. everyone's tastes are different so you have to learn what will work for you. Put yourself first....you will need it during this recovery time. Good luck to you.

Your nutritionist should review the diet stages with you. Every program is a bit different. My program gave me a handbook at the first appointment with the doctor that walked me through everything step by step from pre to post op a year out. It also reviewed supplements and Protein shake choices. Hopefully within the next 3 weeks your they will go over this with you. If not, make sure to ask.

Don't expect pain. Some of use make it through no problem. I woke up feeling perfectly fine. My stomach/abs felt like I had done a really vigorous workout the day before but that's it. I never used the morphine pump because it just didn't hurt that bad. Besides the less doped up you are, the easier it is to get up and walking.

At home you'll need to focus on drinking Water trying to get your Protein in. Clean your house, make a bunch of casseroles and you'll be fine.

I would start buying single serving Protein drinks. Buy them in as many varieties as you can find. Look for ready made, powdered and liquid Protein. Most can be bought at drugs stores like Rite Aid/CVS, specialty shops like GNC or Vitamin Shoppe, even Whole Foods. Some will need to be bought online. Only buy enough protein to last 2 weeks. Sometimes out taste buds change post op. You don't want to be stuck with a case of something you hate. Get a variety and get an unflavored version that can be mixed with Soups or broth.

Thanks and happy new year! I think the holiday stress, ridding myself of nicotine and keeping my weight stable over the holidays just sent me a little over the edge.

I am beginning to prepare myself and family for my surgery on the 19th. They're grown up and not babies so they can handle things!!! ????

I even stocked up on some 4 pack of low zero carb/sugar single serve Protein drinks today that were on sale at the grocery store. ☺️

Good luck and thank you for your support. Happy New Year!

Good luck. Some days I'm really good with this decision and others not so much. Last minute jitters and doubts.

Today I got a call to register for my hospital visit. Got all my clearances and approvals. Yikes.

Ok. Made it through day zero post op. Felt like I did a bazillion crunches and today maybe just a zillion.

"Gas or belly air" hurt my shoulders worse than my belly I think but still manageable on the pain scale. Would've been nice to be warned of that

And I finally peed'd again so I get to go home today!!!

Looking forward to at least being in my own home.

Best of luck and speedy recovery to all you guys!!!

@@Jenngf5 - Congrats on making it through day 1! It's hard to know what to warn folks of. Some have pain, some don't. Some had trouble with gas, some don't. The good news is that it will literally pass. Just keep walking.

Welcome to the losers bench!

Discharged a few hours ago. Coming home to three excited dogs and a family that really wasn't sure how to handle things was rough.

A few pot holes later, some liquid Tylenol and a nice long nap I'm doing much better. Trying some minestrone broth and one oz Isopure non flavored Protein.

I take it thought he Tylenol counts as fluids!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
