Medic Alert

Recommended Posts

So does anyone wear or have thought about wearing a medic alert Bracelet or necklace or dog tags or whatever showing gastric sleeve? Ive looked into some I like, not too expensive either. My wife and my doctor and all my friends and family that is in the medical field want me to. What do you guys think? too non-manly or what?

I wear my Bracelet and never take it off. I saw some bracelets that were manly !!! I have thought about getting a small tattoo on my inner wrist though. I've seen photos of people that have done that !!! My bracelet can be made smaller.... it needs a couple links removed already !!! It does tend to get in the way when I am typing. I thought about a necklace but opted for the more visual bracelet. The price was reasonable.... and if I change my mind and do the Tattoo... I'll have to post a picture!

I already wear a medic alert Bracelet since I have life threatening allergies. I plan to get a new on and add my VSG info to that as well. Another poster recommended a website called Lauren's Hope that has a nice selection to choose from. Given my medical history I'm also considering purchasing a USB medic alert.

Yes, I put mine on the first day I was home from hospital. Mine looks like a medal cross on a chain. You just do not want any Doc trying to scope your little friend unless he knows how small and delicate it is.Nor do you want a bunch of fluids down there. Remember, ER docs and med techs are not that familiar with Bari patients. They need to call your surgon before treating you.

Can you explain a little more why a Bracelet with slerve designation would be helpful?

I would be glad too, my surgeon wants to be notified anytime I go to the ER. He wants to be able to guide the Docs, the ER doc may not understand the limits that a Bari patient has. With sleeve, we have 80% or more of our stomach removed and it is very small. they do not want NG tubes to be installed blindly. They should use like ultrasound to guide tubes in so they do not perforate our little stomach. Also, if you need to swallow contrast die for X-ray, you will not be able to drink standard volume as a normal person. These are a couple reasons my surgeons office recommended the med alert. This makes since to me but you always have a choice, its your body.

I agree about the xrays. I had a one year upper GI barium swallow follow-through on Tuesday this week, to see how my tummy is doing one year post sleeve. What is normally a two hour test took all freaking day because I could only drink about an ounce of that nasty stuff at a time. They took images every fifteen minutes from 9:30 am to 3 pm. My tummy is fine, but I was just exhausted and starving and thirsty when I got home.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
