Lap band surgery scheduled for 1st week of Jan 2015

Recommended Posts

Wee! Congratulations! You are about to change your LIFE. Wahoo!

I've been where you are (just 2 weeks ago!) and I know it can be exciting and a little daunting, too... the diet leading up to surgery is totally manageable - just take it one day at a time, keep counting the sleeps down and surgery day will be here before you know it.

I recommend you read my post in the "Pre-Surgery" forum "Tips for Surgery Day & Coming Home" for some suggestions on how to prep your room and your house for when you come home.

Welcome to the forum! How exciting for you!

Congratulations! I remember how nervous and excited I was -- had never been an overnight patient in a hospital before. It was all so much easier than I thought it would be. And the excitement has never worn off -- all these months later I still feel that thrill of having made this decision for myself. A year later I am so much healthier and happier. Getting that appetite monster off of my back was an amazing thing. Good luck to you -- so glad you're here on the forum. And you, too, Professor -- congratulations on being two weeks out. You are really on your way.

Shannon2015, I am getting excited too as my surgery is scheduled for January 8th:) This is going to be a great year. I love reading everyone's encouraging words on this site. I try to stay positive and take one day at a time. I have also distracted myself with finding some new recipes on pinterest that will work with my new way of eating. I am so excited for you too. Keep in touch.

Congrats on your surgery date! It will go by so fast! I hardly remember mine from March 2014. I just feel normal but skinnier! Good luck to you!

My pre op diet is 2 weeks of medical shakes 3x per day and 250cal of green veg that grow above ground (no carrots, potatoes and things like that). No fruit, meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine. I have ate a lot of salads and a lot of broccoli and cauliflower for dinner. I have turned to pinterest to spice things up. I love to cook so it has been kinda fun finding new ways to prepare food. I actually made "rice" out of cauliflower and it didn't taste that bad:) You should stick to whatever your Dr recommended.

Ah, yes, Dr. Cobourn at SWLC! Dr. C was my surgeon - I was banded on December 18th. Get ready for the best, most professional treatment and follow-up. Wow!

I was on the Smartshakes and greens just like you, and only began to get fatigued of it on about day 11. I was ready for surgery and could not WAIT to have something 'different' in my mouth other than the shakes (which are actually really yummy, don't you find?) and greens.

Your big day will be here in no time!

:)

TheProfessor, you're right the shakes really aren't that bad. I can't wait to meet Dr C in person, I have only spoke to him by phone. I am a nurse and I deal with a lot of Dr's. I can just tell that Dr C has a good personality and has a passion for what he does. Your post has got me even more excited again:). Thanks for the inspiring words.

I really liked the shakes and have a few more on hand for future. I liked adding a teaspoon of instant coffee to the chocolate one in the mornings (for a wee bit of a boost in flavour and caffeine!) and a bit of cinnamon to the vanilla. Mmmm!

Ah, so you are a nurse! You will have far more professional 'insight' than I about how you are treated medically. All I can say is that I was thoroughly impressed by Dr. Cobourn, the nursing team and the anaesthetist. The whole experience has, thus far, exceeded my expectations. I felt I was in such good, capable, experienced hands, and was treated with tremendous respect and caring.

I am so excited for you! :-)

JoJoNYC I couldn't agree with you more. At first I was a little disappointed that I was going to miss some of the holiday festivities. But then I thought the holidays should be about family and friends not what there is to eat. I definitely have to retain my way of thinking about social get together.

I amazed at the differences in everyone's pre-op diet. My doctor told me to limit my caloric intake to 800-900 calories a day for two weeks and to start with a Protein shake in the morning for Breakfast. lunch and dinner were to be a diet entree so counting calories would be easier. Those were the only restrictions. The closer Christmas came, the more I fell off the wagon. My surgery was still a success and I'm 5 days post-op and feeling just a little sore. Heaven forbid I should drop something and have to pick it up off the floor...ouch!! But my energy is back up, even though I'm still on a liquid diet. So far, things are going very well. Best of luck to you on your new weight loss journey in 2015.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
