Anybody have a leak with their sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I've read that left shoulder pains are common when experiencing a leak in the sleeve. I've had that some today, but it's not constant. Just wondering if anybody else has had that pain and it NOT been a leak.

How long ago was your surgery?

The "Gastric Sleeve Complications Support Group" has a bunch of threads about leaks. Maybe that will help answer some of your questions.

I thought shoulder pain was gas. A friend of mine had a leak and her symptoms were non-stop vomiting even after drinking Water.

Shoulder pain is a very common pain from gas following any laparoscopic surgery.

The shoulder pain has pretty much stopped, but I couldn't keep much down yesterday. Thinking I will call the Dr. today just to be safe.

I had a leak. I was sleeved on 4/9, everytime I ate or drank anything I would vomit. On 5/11, I started having substantial pain i my left shoulder/chest area. I toughed it out the remainder of that day and night. The next morning 5/12 my mother took me to the ER and within 1 hour I was in emergency surgery. The doctor told me if I had waited much longer I could have died. It was the WORST pain I had EVER endured.

@@LidiBell did you recover okay after the second surgery or do you still have any issues from it? I think that a leak is everyone's biggest fear.

I felt like a new person after the 2nd surgery. Before...I cried every night to my husband...that I had ruined my life. Begged him to shoot me one night. Looking back, I would go through it all again to be where I am now.

I've just started experiencing left shoulder pain and I was wondering what that was, its uncomfortable to sleep on that side. My check up is coming up so I'll see. It's hard to explain the pain. Do you feel it down your arm?

I felt it my my waist up. You wouldn't be able to breathe if it was a leak. I had a hard time breathing because I was filling up with air as well.

Down the arm pain can be from heart. Better check with your PCP or ER.

Sleeved 5/16/12 with multiple complications including a leak. Trust me, you will know something is very wrong. I couldn't hold anything down, hard time breathing (couldn't walk across the room), shook for no reason, intense acid reflux pain that couldn't be handled with meds, in and out of the hospital, etc

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
