Anyone had bypass with sleep apnea?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm really worried about coming round from anaesthetic having sleep apnea as I have a habit of removing my mask when I'm asleep, anyone got any advice please?

Most of us have sleep apnea and have gone through the surgery. I can't imagine that you would take off the mask when under anesthesia. That's different from sleeping and is very controlled. Plus you have a whole team of people that are there in the OR that will take care of you.

I understand your concern but this is something that should not be a problem.

Best of luck!

I totally get why you have nerves!! I was scared, too. Now I look back and laugh! lol. You'll be fine. And make sure you are up and walking as soon as they let you. Walk as much as you can right away. It actually helps you heal better. But wait until they let you, of course.

These surgeons and their staff are extremely well educated and have a lot of experience, especially with this surgery. Or, at least the ones who specialize, which is most of them. Let them worry about this part. Your part to worry about and take care of is after the surgery but I know you will be fine and do great.

Best of luck and let us know how it went!

For several years I would snore so loud that it kept my wife awake at night. But after a couple weeks after surgery, that all went away. Now sometimes when I wake up at night, I find my wife hovering over me. Apparently I am sleeping so quietly that she is trying to determine if I am still alive.

I will be having the surgery on the 8th and have a CPAP. I am supposed to bring it to the hospital for after the surgery. This part is the least of worries to be sure.

The surgery itself leaves one with worry. Will I wake up, have a heart attack, have issues etc. Am I making the right decision etc. It is a lot of pressure and not considered lightly by me. The thing i keep holding on to is that I am doing this to improve my health.

I have sleep apnea as well. My bariatric advocate informed me to bring my CPAP machine for post op. She said it helps with anesthesia for those on the machine. I just got approved for surgery by my insurance and I am waiting to set a surgery date. I'm getting excited and nervous at the same time.

Thanx, I have 6 days to go before surgery and to be honest I'm absolutely petrified and kind of excited all at the same time, I've never felt so many different emotions all at the same time before but reading these support forums have helped me a lot! Thanx everyone for your help and I wish you all a very happy new year xx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
