BCBS 5year Weight History

Recommended Posts

I have BCBS NC and need 5 years of weight history in order for them to approve the band. So far I have something from 2002, 2003, and 2006. So I'm missing 2 years. My doctor's office said, I need atleast 4 of the 5 years, I could even try weight watcher's weigh in's, or something from Curves. I've done nothing like that in those years so I'm stuck! Anyone have any ideas? I'm willing to fabricate! Shhhhhh! I've gotten everything else done, even the yummy upper GI! I need one more year of weight history. Has anyone else been in this situation?:help:

When I spoke to BCBS about this they said it needed to be a 5 year span to show that you were obese, so from 2002 to 2006 is how they would look at it. My doctor said they knew if you were overweight in one year that you most likely didn't lose all of the weight and put it back on in that time span. So call them for verification, because I had missing years and still got approved.

I have BCBS in Nevada and while they wanted a 5 year history of dieting, etc., I just wrote down everything I'd tried. They never asked for proof, which is a good thing, because I don't save receipts!

My primary doc also wrote a great letter about how she's watched me struggle for years as well.

If you have medical records that discuss your weight and weight loss attempts, and it's all documented, it shouldn't matter if you've skipped a year. Even if you just have medical records that document your weight from year to year. Have you had your first evaluation appt yet with the surgeon? They will ask you, in detail, what diets you've tried and in what year you tried them. (Or at least I hope they will ask you.) This information should qualify as documentation. I never had to produce receipts or evidence that I'd tried Jenny Craig, WW, etc.

I had all of my med records copied and then I scoured them for any weight-related discussions or notes. I also had a bout with plantar fasciitis (sp), which can be blamed on weight, so I made sure to include that one. I brought weight up at every annual visit so it was always marked in my record. I then turned the records over to my surgeon's office. My surgeon's office has a physician asst who writes a terrific, convincing letter to BC / BS, using the documentation provided to her. I'll bet your surgeon's office has someone similar. Or at least I hope so. Good luck to you!
