First fill ever 18 months post-op

Recommended Posts

After a year and a half post op I finally got my first fill last Monday. I lost over 120 pounds on my own with nothing in my band! I am now miserable and haven't felt right since. I have barely eaten, sure can't get in Protein, I have heartburn so bad into my back despite taking my prilosec as ordered, my normal every day pills are now getting stuck and it hurts so bad. My band feels like it's spasming.. I'm just not right at all. When they filled me they had me sit and drink Water till it went down easy to know how much Fluid to put in, I thought that was an easy way to judge. I did have her take a little fluid out right then because it felt the water was hesitating going down and I didn't want that. I'm wondering how long do I wait to call it a day and just go get an unfill so I can feel normal again? I was allowed to advance my diet to regular foods yesterday and I didn't because I didn't want to deal with any issues so I just ate yogurt instead. I can't imagine trying a piece of meat if my pills are even getting stuck (pills that I've easily taken down normally) it hurts and I don't like it. Any suggestions?! Thanks..

Sorry to hear about your problems. I had a fill recently which caused similar problems. I was unfilled today and still have the pain. I have been advised liquids only for 24 hours. My doctor's office says I should have contacted them earlier even tho my problems got really bad on Xmas Eve and my doctor thinks my band has now slipped. I would contact your doctor for advice. Hope this helps.

I did liquid for 2 days and then soft for 2 days and haven't advanced to regular food like I was supposed to yesterday. . I had decreased my heartburn pill to once a day instead of twice a long time ago cuz i had no reflux symptoms.. i resumed taking it twice a day just today so I'm hoping that will help if not Monday will call the MD. Sorry to hear you continue to have the pain..

Thanks the pain has eased and I am feeling considerably better. Hopefully the band will sort itself before I see my doctor again in the new year.

I didn't have heartburn just severe stabbing pains and vomiting. I would still call your doctor on Monday to make sure you are on the right track I delayed because I didn't want to disturb the doctor over xmas but I would have saved myself a lot of pain and I would have been able to eat and drink something. I got to the stage when liquids wouldn't go down. I was coughing at night and vomiting in my sleep. Thanks for your reply hope you get sorted out. Despite my problems which are the first in four years I know I wouldn't have lost the weight without the band.

Yes I'm definitely grateful for the band and my success. I'll take the good with the bad.. I've been feeling fairly normal since last night so hoping I'm on track to getting used to my fill and being able to eat properly. Sounds like you had a very bad fill I can't imagine all that vomiting. Glad your getting straightened out.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
