End of week 3 and frustrated

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new to BariatricPal. Was hoping for suggestions or at least answers. December 1st I was sleeved. Since September I have lost 29 lbs and 20 inches, since surgery I have lost 13 lbs and 9 inches. I had hoped this week of Christmas I would have dropped the last 3 lbs and been in the 1's - opposite occurred I gained 5 lbs. Also, I can only eat 3 or 4 bites and I feel full, to the point where I spend about 30 minutes getting rid of the gas before I can try again. I'm on Prilosec twice a day, gas-x, and pepcid. I have yet to get my 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water. My body just can't handle it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For me, walking for 20 minutes after eating relieves a LOT of gas. Also the slower I eat and the smaller the bites I take, the less gas I seem to have. Break your 3-4 bites into even smaller bits. Make it 10-12. Use a baby spoon! It does get better, but the gas thing is just going to be a fact of life for a while after surgery. Most important is to not get discouraged. You are in control of this journey. Focus on Protein, liquid and walking, (or whatever exercise you choose.) Don't focus on the scale. Do what you know you have to do and the results that you want will happen!

It will all be worth it in the long run!

I should add, it takes most people a while to hit their Protein and liquids goals after surgery. There is nothing unusual about that. Don't think "I didn't have 60 grams of Protein today." Instead think "I had 5 more grams of protein today than I did yesterday!" You will get there!

You're doing just fine. 90% of people stall at 3 weeks (yes, gaining weight can be part of a stall. I do it all the time). You're body is still adjusting. It's in shock. Don't worry about the scale right now, and concentrate on healing, hydration and then Protein. Your little tummy is still very swollen from the surgery, so it will take time to get all your liquid and Protein goals in, but be persistent!

Yes, step away fom the scale :). You are doing just fine. Your body needs to adjust as surgery has thrown it into disarray ! I lost quite a bit preop and am now 2 weeks post op. I don't expect to lose very quickly and am now only weighing myself once a week...

Thank you all for responding. SuperDave I took your advice and picked up the baby spoon and fork.

This process is scary yet exciting. Glad to know what's happening is normal.

What is your diet? Are you doing soft foods or purées? Does your nutritionist or doctor want you using Protein shakes? Are you able to get any exercise yet?

I agree with others, leave the scale alone. Have a little more patience. It will happen.

Sorry, just saw this. I was on soft at the time. Since then I am working out 5-6 times a week. Left the scale alone as everyone suggested, seeing the changes in my clothes. At 6 almost 7 weeks I'm still doing Protein Shakes. Thank you for your guidance.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
