Pre-Surgery Shake Diet

I was placed on a pre surgery Protein Shake diet. I was to drink 5, 8 ounce shakes per day (Bariatric Advantage) with the option of having 4 high Protein low carb meals under 600 calories as a shake replacement. I followed this diet well my first 5 days, then for 4 straight days I ate meals I shouldn't have eaten (Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day dinner). I ate 1 full meal each of those days and now I am 4 days outside of my surgery date and I am starting to worry I may have ruined the liver shrinking diet. I am drinking nothing but the shakes the last 3 days to be sure, I was just looking to see if anyone else here that had the surgery done laparoscopically that had to follow a similar diet cheated on it as bad as I did... Were there any major complications? I can't have my surgery rescheduled, if I do its going to cost another $2000 out of pocket, as of right now, insurance is covering my hospital portion 100%. Should I be worried? I'm afraid of reaching out to my doctor about it in fear he will want me to reschedule.

@@swmann12 Hummm well you should be worried about a lot of things at this point. You need to figure out why you would defy the surgeons Orders and eat things you weren't suppose to be eating regardless of the holidays. Especially when you know you "can't reschedule" or pay more. I would think that would have been motivation enough to stop you from eating like that. I never got the option of eating food in my two weeks just liquids, I had a birthday, desert concert, all kinds of stuff I had to Get through but I did it. I guess you should ask your self how bad do you really want this? The pre-op diet is only a short amount of time in a life long WLS life style. I know the pre-op can be difficult but it serves a purpose and your surgeon has that plan for you for a reason. I don't know, I would hope if you just Finnish this out on Protein Drinks you should be ok, heck some Drs don't even require a pre-op diet but that's not the point, the point is you need to be compliant with your Drs orders. If you trust Him/her to do surgery on you, you should trust the plan they have set for you. Good luck on your surgery! I hope it all works out for you!

Do you have a surgery date? If you are back on track you likely will be okay for surgery, but I also think you need to discuss this slip up with the nutritionist and/or psych so you can come up with better skills to handle things like the holidays and such. It might cost your more money, but you could do yourself physical harm if you have the surgery and don;t have your eating under control. Think about it less in terms of the money and more about the skills you need to be successful and healthy in the long run. I'm sure you aren't the first patient to slip up .

I ate when I was going through severe headaches and dizzy spells... If I were to do it over again, I probably would have done the same thing to be honest. I've been following a diet for the past 6 months to prep for surgery and lost close to 50 pounds alone on that. I follow instruction, the Protein Shake diet however made me feel like complete crap 90% of the time, like I wasn't getting adequate nutrition. Of course trying to contact my doctor about it over the Christmas holiday was impossible. :/ My surgery date is 12/30.

Yes that's a Pennsylvania Dutch thing. I'm in Philly. Good thing too cause I don't really care for applesauce.

Chiming in about my surgery I had done on the 30th. All went well and the doctor said my liver was perfect regardless of me eating. Surgery took right at 1 hour and I was home on the 31st with minimal pain. My only issue is eating at this point. I basically have to force myself to eat and I absolutely dread it. Will this go away with time or is that just how it goes?

@@swmann12 - It comes and goes. I've had days of no appetite and days of intermittent hunger. By week one I was completely over Protein Shakes. It's important to stick with your program. It's good discipline as you are trying to learn and develop new eating habits. It's also important that you get the proper nutrients and fluids your body needs.

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
