Is TOO much protein a concern?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks post-op and I was advised to have around 60 grams of Protein daily, but sometimes I have upwards of 90-100 grams. (Isopure clear drinks have 40 grams, Premiere Protein has 30 grams). Is it possible to have TOO much protein? Are there any side effects I should worry about? I know getting enough protein is often a concern of the newly sleeved, but I am wondering the opposite!

According to my surgeon & nutritionist instructions, the human body can only absorb 20g of Protein at a time. Anything it cannot consume will exit through bodily waste. So, my orders are to consume protein throughout the day. I typically nurse a Protein Shake all morning, Isopure all afternoon, and Greek yogurt or protein enfused pudding in the evening. Gives me 60g or more by bedtime. Btw, I'm 8 days post op :). Hope this helps

I have wondered this too. Someone posted a few weeks back that their blood work showed that their Protein level was too high. I never knew blood work could determine that, but I guess it can.

Just like you, I also use Isopure as my primary Protein source. I use the powder, which has 50 grams of protein in every 12 ounce serving. When I drink two servings a day plus yogurt (sometimes I substitute the yogurt for tuna, chicken, turkey, sardines, or dried beef), I get about 112 grams of protein. I know that is a lot and it puzzles me when others struggle to get even half that.

However, not all Protein drinks are the same. Many cannot stomach an Isopure drink. My opinion is that you just have to suck it up and get use to it. I have thought about switching to a similar Protein Drink that is cheaper, bit I haven't found it yet. No other Protein Drink has more (or equal amounts) of Vitamins and minerals than Isopure. You get your daily requirements of Vitamins and minerals by drinking 2 servings a day. Syntrax and Premier Protein have some added vitamins and minerals, but it's not nearly as much as Isopure. I would buy Syntrax nectar, but it is not much cheaper than Isopure. The cheapest Isopure (zero carb whey protein isolate) is at Puritan's Pride (puritan.com) for $44 (3 pound jug, free shipping). I would love to know if anyone is paying less than that because it's getting quite expensive. One 3 pound jug only lasts me 12-14 days.

I try to get 20 grams with each meal, and two 10 gram Snacks - that gives me 80, with real food. The most I have had on any one day was 110, but never more than about 20 grams at a time.

Right after surgery I was told to strive for 90 grams. Then they had me dial it back to a max of 70 daily to avoid kidney stones.

Be sure to stay hydrated because that helps prevent stones.

I've upped my Protein intake to about 120 grams a day because of exercising. I can say that is really has helped in muscle building and muscle recovery. I used to try to get my 60-80 grams only from food, now it is impossible so I add in 2 shakes per day. I think it is fine.

@@WL WARRIOR. Yes, your post of blood test wil check for Protein. I was checked, by blood work at my three month check up and will have another blood work done when I return for my six month check up.

As mentioned too much Protein can effect the kidneys, however as @tamg26k mentioned you can tolerate higher levels if you are working out frequently, especially if you are lifting weights or body building. You doctor will likely check this as part of your bloodwork. I keep my Protein intake between 65- 75 with one protein shake and 2 meals a day.

My Nut said unless I am lifting a lot of weights, extra Protein is just extra calories I don't need. She said to keep it 60-80 and that is hard enough for me to do.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
