ShannonbKSU 53 Posted December 24, 2014 Maybe buyers remorse is a bit strong but I'm laying here and I'm head hungry. For Mexican in fact. I'm thinking I want chips and salsa and guacamole dip. Then my emotions are sad bc I can't have those things. Will I ever have them again? Just struggling right now with the huge change and "there's no going back now" thoughts. MrsMurky721 130 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) You will be able to eat that again, just smaller portions. And that's exactly what I'm telling myself to get through the day. I think you and I need to go out for some Mexican food together when we're a few months out because since surgery I've been having the same craving! I would kill for some chips and queso and a margarita! But mine may not work out so well anymore because apparently you have to choose between eating or drinking or there won't be enough room for either Oh well! Still happy I did it! BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 24, 2014 You can have some of it soon. Once I was on soft foods at 6 weeks, I would add a bit of salsa and dices avocado to my eggs. I'm not ready for chips just yet but that's just a personal preference. I've been cleared to eat whatever I can tolerate.
Luvin_Life125 558 Posted December 24, 2014 Hang in there. You are not alone. Buyer's remorse is very, very common early in the post op period. Most of us wonder what we did to ourselves and if it was the best choice. Once you get past the first few weeks after surgery, you will be more sure of your decision. Hang in there and follow your program and you will make it through. Once you are able to start expanding your diet and see the weight going down, it will be a lot easier to see the good side of the surgery. Welcome to the loser's bench! NotWishWhen512 31 Posted December 24, 2014 It's SO hard at first, but it gets better! I'm almost 3 months out, and being able to have just a taste of something you didn't think you'd have again is so rewarding. (And what is it about Mexican food? I thought about it non-stop post-op too!)
CDenney 2 Posted December 24, 2014 I am currently 8 weeks out and I eat that stuff now, corn chips do not bother me, I can get a taco salad, light lettuce add Beans and get it with ground beef and just eat it really slow. I split it with a friend who had surgery too, and I normally only eat half of my half, and I'm full, guacamole is great avocado's are great Protein, just take it slow and don't over indulge
MichiganChic 3,262 Posted December 24, 2014 That's a pretty normal feeling, even for those who were best prepared and really understood what they signed up for. It's just such a sense of permanence, and there is no escaping it. It's odd to not be able to eat what and when you want. Pretty soon, though, you'll start to love it. You'll love the weight loss, the way you look and feel, and it will SO be worth it. I used to love that I would be full from a couple of bite. At two years out, I still have restriction, but it takes way more than a couple of bites to feel it! I sometimes wish I could get that feeling back! So, I guess that answers your question, you'll be able to eat again, and you'll have to really work at not overeating.
Kindle 8,667 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) You will be eating all of your favorites again someday soon. Guacamole and Refried Beans with salsa and cheese were some of the first pureed meals I had. In the meantime, you can sip on Swanson's Mexican tortilla Soup starter base. It was especially good with Un jury's cheese Protein Powder added. Edited December 24, 2014 by Kindle

Tauruslady5 154 Posted December 24, 2014 Don't worry, you were not the only one to do that. Mine wasn't food though. I was upset because I had no energy and so wanted to clean my house and get Christmas decorations up. I ended up talking to one of my friends on Facebook to help me though that tough day. It was exactly day 3 just like yours. I did, however, by the 2nd week of only broth, wanted to chew anything. I wanted a pickle. So my daughter cut up a slice, let me put it in my mouth, but stood there until I spit it out. Plesae do what you are told regarding food. Another one of my friends friend actually died after having surgery because she decided to eat regular food after surgery, not listening to her doctor, and had a bad complication. Most likely she broke open her staples and food got into her cavity and caused a bad infection. I know the first 2 weeks is hard, I cried alot. But I made it through just like you will. We are all here to help each other out............ Annamarie
Jill7768 46 Posted December 24, 2014 It will get better! i cried on my first day home because I felt like I broke myself! Then about a week later, my family had Mexican food. I ate one chip, chewed really good, and wanted more. I cried because the head hunger ( not real hunger) got the best of me. Now, 5 weeks later, it is becoming all worth it! the first couple weeks are sooooo hard!
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted December 24, 2014 At one year and one day (officially a bariatric veteran, now) I can eat anything I want, but what I want has changed. Tummy real estate is limited, so I have to be responsible about what I give my body to thrive on. I do eat Mexican food with the reminder that I can't follow jalepenos with a big glass of milk. So, what I do is make sure that if I have salsa, I have a little sour cream, too.
CheleLynn45 615 Posted December 24, 2014 I am 8 weeks and 3 days post op and have been following my docs orders like crazy. I have had a few times where I smell something and I am like Mmmmm I want that, but it doesn't overwhelm me and I am fine. I feel lucky right now cause I really haven't had hunger pains. I do two shakes a day and one small meal and I have been losing consistently. After some Christmas shopping myself, my daughter and my mom went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. My mom is visiting us in AZ and had been craving Mexican. Usually I like to plan ahead before I go out ( this was my third restaurant visit since surgery) but this time we just went, I told her if there wasn't anything for me I would just eat when I got home. Well they brought the chips and salsa and I just stared at them. I wanted some but was afraid to eat the chips. I ordered just the carne asada steak. It was thin steak (my first steak also since surgery). I cut it up in tiny pieces and dipped it in the salsa and chewed it up. I ate till I felt full, not stuffed. It all went down well and stayed down and I had no issues later that night. I had to estimate what I ate since my food scale was at home. The more I do this the more "normal" I feel. I focus on the company more than the food. It will all come with time. When I was brand new I would read posts like this and wonder if it would really happen for me, and I can honestly say it did. That is why I think it is soooo important for people to post on here for people who are struggling and for new people. It really helps, I know it helped me and I am trying to pay it forward to help others. Have a GREAT Holiday Season everyone, and Merry Christmas!!!!
