Hello LapBand Community,

I haven't been on here in quite some time. I had my surgery at the end of 2010 and I can say that since the surgery I've lost approximately 30lbs. Anyway, I don't even care about that part right now. I know I need to do better and I really haven't. My issue is I have severe pain around my port area to the point that it hurts to touch my skin on my tummy in that area. It is always sore very tender to the touch and that has me worried. I would like to go to the doctor office that performed the surgery but they are approximately 100 miles from my home and I currently do not have a car. I called a surgeon in my area that I can get to with ease and they will not see me because they did not perform the surgery bummer right. I currently do not have any cc's in my band it is completely wide open probably another reason I wasn't able to loose what I needed to. I don't know what to do about this pain in my tummy it is a horrible feeling. Please give any suggestions that you may have. Thank you

Dear ebreeze,

I would suggest if you can't see a Dr closer to home then you need to make the journey to your original Dr. Don't leave it, pain is not normal and you need to take care to make sure you are ok.

Dear E,

I see that you are an executive assistant, that means you must be a take charge kind of lady? Take charge of your health and put you first. Think about posting somewhere, wk, church, neighborhood, etc that you need help with transportation, poss. Rent a car? My guess is, once you see your original surgeon, it will be easier to transfer to one closer to you, with the original doctors help. Request copies of your records and last most current visit for the new doc. Good luck E, give yourself the gift of making you the priority. When you are in good shape, phys. And emotionally, it's easier to take care of everyone's needs, including those near and dear.

I really hope my original doctor can transfer me to one closer to home and I can have maintenance done here once we figure out what causing the pain in my abdomen. I would love to get some cc's put into the band and then maybe after all this time I can actually start the weight loss journey.

Please don't leave this. It is probably not this but one relatively rare complication is erosion where the band eats into the tissue of the stomach. That sounds painful but for some reason, it often isn't. Sometimes the only early symptom is if an infection builds up which can travel along the tubing to the port area which becomes inflamed, possibly swollen and very sore to the touch.

As I say, this is rare. But health is too important to risk.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
