Is a colonoscopy a requirement for the sleeve surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have heard from some folks that you get a colonoscopy same day/time as the endoscopy. (2 birds with 1 stone) Any truth to that rumor? Not sure why a colonoscopy would be needed IMHO.

It probably depends on the doctor, but I didn't get either - they didn't even make us do a "clean out" prior to surgery!

(editing to add that, after a few days on Dilaudid, I wish they had...)

hmmm...how about anyone in KC with the KC Bariatric hosp? I"ve asked friends who had the surgery and they didn't either, but my OBGYN told me today that they won't do the surgery without a colonoscopy. Never heard that before.

I had one a few months ago.. It didn't hurt at all. It was like floating in a jug of wine. Lol

I really hope I get to "pass" on that one. I'm ok with the EGD, but I've heard a few bad stories about colonoscopies gone bad.

I just had one in September just because I knew I should. So if it is a requirement....I'm already done.

I've had several coolnoscopies due to family history of colon cancer. The procedure is no big deal. I was taking a well needed nap during. The prep is a B#*#h! I was not required to have one before my sleeve.

Colonoscopies are usually done for certain age ranges and/or if there is family history of colon cancer. I wonder if that still applies with WLS.

My doctor does Upper GI instead of the EGD. Not colonoscopies at all. I'm 51. My MGF had colon cancer when he passes but he was 102 and dying when it was discovered.

Perhaps it's more related to family history?

?? no idea. Nobody that has had surgery at the center I'm going to go to has had to do a colonoscopy --Just the EGD. I'd like to not also. I do the yearly poop test. That is enough for me. No one else in the family has had any trouble, My Mom is healthy as a horse at 85.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
